Well my view is that would be an immoral act being used in order to

It's about time we stopped subsidising the wealthiest people in the
countryside and, on the contrary, started putting a tax on land
holdings.

Thus taking away the incentive for using the countryside as farmland, and
encouraging more profitable uses, like concreting it and covering it with
houses?

why not go back to buying our food from countries where it is more
economical to produce it like we did before WW2 and the U boats?

World market prices for food are a lot lower than EU prices, you know.
It's called 'capitalism' and 'free trade' and our government is
supposed to approve of it. So, no: doing away with agricultural
protectionism does not mean higher food prices. It means quite
dramatically /lower/ food prices.

Suits me fine. That's money we're paying in taxes at the moment.

Not that it really does, unless we also introduce a substantial tax
on food miles, thus pushing up import costs.
