Thanks. Looks like people are fond of Smartwool. The suggestion to buy
one of each make of sock is sensible, but I might just start with one
pair. I just get the largest socks available. Since they're elastic,
that's usually okay, but I think they wear out a little faster for me.

So are there any suggestions for online retailers? I found a couple of
threads on Google where they're mentioned, but they're about four years old.

There are hundreds, and since it's a relatively low price item, the
price doesn't vary much. Use one of the comparison sites such as
Froogle or Kelkoo. If you've got a nearby local shop it makes more
sense to purchase there to avoid delivery charges.

You need to search the web.

Right, and Google does what exactly?

In the original post I identified a list of a few dozen retailers, but
no information as to which ones are good. I don't see that searching the
web will get me better recommendations than what I could get here, but YMMV.

Sorry I didn't take any notice of the list. I can't be bothered to
read it, but FWIW I've been buying quite a bit of stuff recently and
have traded successfully with Castle Mountain & Moor, Penrith
Survival, Field & Trek, Cotswold Outdoor, Simply Scuba.
