a product of the Internet. Back in the day when we talked face to face,
we were considerate of their feelings or we'd get our butts kicked :-)

talking about situations wherein it was all one way or another, as in
"Back in the day everyone was polite, but with the advent of computers
everyone's become rude." My experience when I was younger was that
the boys could get away with being rude sometimes, while I as a girl
wasn't allowed to be anything other than Miss Mary Sunshine because it
was not "ladylike". The kicking reference is what I sometimes wanted
to do while I smiled and acted ladylike.

Not all-or-nothing but the trend is there. Folks I
have butted heads with on UseNet, I've ended up meeting
in person and getting along fine in person.

UseNet has a culture of its own, and part of that culture
is having UseNet-newbies lamenting the style of interaction.

newbie refrain on most newsgroups. It isn't specific to
