If I need to do this for 2007 PBP qualification then so be it,
otherwise it'll feel like LELs poor relation unless the route is really
really interesting.

increase the success rate of those who do enter.

Were there really that many drop outs on PBP? I wasn't aware of that. You'd
think the existing entry requirements would be demanding enough to ensure
that this wasn't the case.

qualify. :-)

I don't know any numbers regarding DNFs. I am not certain that the
qualifying criteria is same for all nationalities. I had heard of
certain American randonee clubs who organised a very easy qualification
program which hadn't prepared their riders very well. Easy in that the
events consisted of an number of laps and rider got to visit their own
house several times.

I heard something about USAians doing a 600 qualifier which started at the
top of a mountain and rolled down to the coast!

do solo RAAM next year...

It was on the yahoo Audax group, and apparently the USA contingent were
one of the worst culprits for packing. The 1000k that is rumoured will
be in the South if it runs. No way am I doing a 1000k unless it is
mandatory, as Phil Chadwick pointed out most 600's in the UK are harder
than PBP, and he should know he seems to have ridden them all.

In the south, that sucks. The leading DA is currently mine, West
Yorkshire, it shuld be up North. If one has to do a 1000 to qualify I
might seriously think about The Cascades 1000 in Washington USA,
organised by a friend of mine, my LEL and my SR has already qualified
me for next years edition if it runs (2005 was the inaugural year, not
sure if its an annual event) Or maybe BMB.

This won't be a PBP qualifier, it may not happen anyway. When is BMB?
that would be a fall back for not getting into PBP (which hasn't
happened yet AFAIK but there are no guarantees)

They run BMB every non-PBP year; this year's starts August 18th. Current
Organisators say they're not doing it after 2006, thobut, so unless someone
else steps into the wossname...

Dave Green, who provides most excellent cycling advice for Nathan, won RAAM
twice as part of Team RAF - he came second last year too. Chris Hopkinson
completed the RAAM this year - first Brit to complete the solo event IIRC.
