I think it may have had more to do with the freshness of the rubber. It dries out over time.

I don't think there's any difference, the Scotts you mostly see are older and dirtier.

before i head over to NAPA for a can of belt dressing and a pack of razor blades let me ask:
will the modern longer brake pads such as sold thru the harris website, longer than stock or oem circa l987 ten speed pads, cause dysfunction when mounted on the standard dia-compe 10 speed centerpull brake units?
or recommend a max length for 10 speed centerpulls? does the max length vary with the compound?
i had to ask before coughing up $25. the photos are just beautiful.

- - No. I have KoolStop MTB pads on my Mafac Racers and they work great.

Depending on fork/rim clearance, you may need to use a "thinline" model in the front. But why would you want to use anything but "Continentals" on a dia-compe brake?

I'm afraid those will cause your brakes to work better. Worse yet, if you install teflon-lined housing and stainless machined cables, you might be afflicted with "dual pivotus superioris", a nasty problem that can cause spontaneous flight over the handlebars ... :-) :-)

Really? I have some old (but new) Scott-Mathauser pads and they do seem to be a darker color than the new ones. They are still in their original bag.

Longer or shorter pads have no effect on brake performance.

Continentals? What is a Continental-roll and butter? Mafac Racers? Ditto! stainless machined cables?
The idea I picked up was: a gross increase in the center pull pad's effectiveness in converting motion to friction/heat would cause the center pull mechanism to malfunction-the mechanism would overload and pull downward with the rim rotation, misalign and uh blow out the sidewall or tangle itself in the whatis…
This is not probable when increasing pad surface area on a center pull brake mechanism??
weel, i asked sheldon brown to cover that-how much brake pad area will a centerpull take if a... and prior i asked expert one and thru 7 and each time gotta mumblemumble. there's a liabilty problem here for getting larger than original pads tangled in the whatis? gee i asked eureka- mumblemumble.
