alt.test is instant but there seems to be a 3 or more min delay between
posting and the message appearing here.
Subscribe to a group you don't like and do the tests.... 🙂

OE gives you a warning that your post MAY not appear
for hours doesn't Knode have a similar warning?

That is odd.
Don't forget that with Usenet, the message only has to get to your ISP (or
Usenet service), before you can see it - it does not need to propagate around
the net to any degree.
The software that most ISP's run tends to make posted messages available
immediately. It certainly shouldn't make any difference which group you post to.
Did you do it enough times to rule out coincidence?

Are you just trying to cause trouble?

No, I was actually interested in the effect he described, and I thought that his
initial observations were with on topic posts anyway.
There really should not be a difference between time delays based on groups.

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!
Do people not understand the nature of a store and forward network? You
post to one node. Periodically, that node polls its neighbours, and
passes the message on. Periodically, those neighbours poll their
neighbours, and so on. And over a period of about 48 hours (sometimes
more) your message will percolate to the furthest reaches of Usenet.
GRADUALLY. It is not synchronous. It is not real time. It is not
instant. And what's more IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE. It is reliable and
ubiquitous BECAUSE it is not reliant on any given link (or any given
node) actually working at any given time.

Quite true, but unless he's trying to read the posts from a different ISP to the
one he posted on, all that is irrelevant. His post goes to his ISP, and that's
where it comes back from. Normally, what you post appears near enough instantly
_to you_, although, obviously it may take some hours to appear on someone with a
differnt ISP (and hence newsserver).
What certainly shouldn't happen is that posts to one group consistently take
longer to appear than posts to another.

Simon, have you ever heard the saying "Don't wrestle with lusers: they
enjoy it, but you just get covered with mud" ?

Simon Brooke said:Yes, but not necessarily (and in fact often not) instantaneously. I
can't see my posts until my server next processes its incoming spool,
which is once every 20 minutes - and I post directly on the server.
I've often wondered about that.
All the ISP's I've had over the years: Demon, BuyAndSell(Eire), Onetel, Tiscali,
Plus; seem to process incoming usenet posts as near instantaneously as makes no
odds.
Google groups, on the other hand can take *hours* to process (they actually warn
you about it).

One can imagine doing a series of tests, and actually getting in synch with the
spool cycle thus giving you the weird result reported.
