I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a couple of girls are raped by
classmates or molested by school employees/janitors/local residents,
heck, *family members* every year. This is not a black versus white
issue. This is a *discipline* issue.

The judge or, rather, the legal system is part of the problem, though,
imo. When did children discover that it was okay to talk back? And I'm
not speaking of reasonable and level-headed dissension, but rude,
unnecessary disruption seemingly only for the purpose of disruption.
What lawyer decided that teachers could NOT administer corporal
punishment? When did children learn that they could call youth services
if their parent struck or physically disciplined them?

I'm certainly not recommending wholesale beatings and floggings of
students and children by their parents and teachers, but I do remember
and *respect* the memory of Mrs. Lawrence who was my 4th grade teacher
and /Ritalin in human form/ for my over- if not hyper-active self.

I wasn't labeled as ADD, but I exhibited then many of the
characteristics of those kids who are labeled as such today. Mrs.
Lawrence and her paddle kept me in check. She kept me on track. She
helped me succeed when I would much rather have cut up and acted like a
fool.

Discipline is the key and race should not be considered the problem.
Quality teachers are a concern, of course, but even the /quality/
teachers will find it impossible to teach in a classroom where students
do not follow basic rules of conduct. Sit down, open your books, listen
to the directions, *think*, ask if you need clarification, but don't
interrupt your classmates and your teacher just to get attention.

Again, I'm not advocating kicking a child's butt up and down the
hallway, but discipline - in some form - is necessary to have a

me calling the shots, I might just request thousands of Mrs. Lawrence
clones and the simultaneous banning of lawyers from public schools as
well as the neighborhoods of those students who attend those schools. I
wonder what the result would be.

Denial, excuse-making, refusal to complete even the most elementary of
tasks... those negative behaviors exhibit in every color and in every
ethnic group. White flight? Not the problem. *Standards of Behavior*
flight? Yeah, big time.

When I was in the US during high school, my school had excellent discipline.

Corporal punishment was an option at my school, but extremely mild and
extremely rare. I doubt that a kid who is contemplating entering a fist
fight is going to be deterred by a possible paddling anyway.

The important point was that teachers had authority to write detention slips
for disruptive students. Get 10 of those and you were yanked out of the
regular classroom schedule, and into "corrective learning".

If the disruptive types can be removed and dealt with early, you don't get
an escalation in the first place. The right idea is not to worry about how to
discipline a rapist (though I suppose it's important to have a procedure for
everything), it's to maintain a level of order that prevents this from
happening in the frst place.

My husband used to have a teacher who kept a wooden paddle hanging on the
wall near his desk. It was in the shape of a hand and was painted black.
He used to threaten his students with his "black hand of death" if they
didn't behave themselves. He never actually had to use it. ;-)

Well, Mrs. Lawrence used hers! And, although I took many twists and
turns along the way career-wise, I'm a teacher now, too. There's no
longer a "black hand of death" or Mrs. Lawrence's version with the
holes drilled in it to reduce wind resistance as an option, so I use a
sense of humor and utmost patience when dealing with my students.

After all of these years of freedom, there is still a large segment of the

In the city, everyone works different hours, thus providing no constant
sleep period as it is in the country. It's a [censored] to acclimate to, I know,
but that is what has to be done. Or find some other way of compensating,
such as the headphones.

You could find a radio/mp3 player that uses earbuds for listening devices.
Then find Coast-to-Coast AM on the radio. Most of the time, it will put you
to sleep pronto.
