heh. The Jeep has a digital external temp. display - if it's lower
than 2C I just stick it into permanent 4x4 and drive as per any other
day.

So, you are approaching a bend at 50 mph. The bend has ice over all of
the road. All 4 wheels are on ice. How does your precious 4wd help
then?

It increases maximum cornering speed by approximately 7%, IIRC. Can't be
bothered to find a cite, though.

very unlikely cornering is about latral grip mostly, if any thing the
extra weight of a 4x4 drivetrain will hinder rather than help. you can
drive fast in ice, given ice tires and skill.

and anecdoctally the kids play in the street i live in, it's a
cul-de-sac so no though traffic it's also narrow with lots of parked

no one seems to have a problem, kids play cars park etc. not a issue. if
any thing it's the kids space.
