The ones you buy in the UK are the same as the American ones, and use the
manual you can find on the Garmin web site.

Just remember to set the datum to Ordnance Survey National Grid.

Basic etrex has one route storage, geko 201 has 20.

I nearly bought the basic etrex, but at the last minute got the geko,
pleased with my choice.

I have both and almost never use the eTrex. The 201 is smaller, lighter
and more capable. The battery life is quite a bit shorter because it
uses AAAs but I carry spare NiMh and olny have to change them in a day
if the first set were not freshly charged.

Agreed, especially in the winter.

However now warmer weather is here I find that one set lasts for at
least for one day on the hills. Also carry a spare set of
rechargeables and a set of non-rechargeables as well.......

I've got a Geko301 which I normally use with the electronic compass
turned off and the GPS in normal mode, it then behaves very similarly
to the 201.

I find that a set of freshly charged 800mAh AAA NiMh cells lasts me for
about 8 hours of continuous use in warm weather (much less in cold
weather). However I would recommend you get a good battery charger that
individually charges each cell and monitors them individually rather
than in pairs. Until I replaced my charger (one which worked on time
alone) I was getting unpredictable results from my cells.

Don't know if it applies to this model but my Etrex Legend has an option
to alter the frequency with which sattelite updates are made, this affects
battery life.

900 mAh is the maximum capacity AAA NiMH you can get at the moment.
These are obtainable at very reasonable prices on Ebay. With a
Foretrex 101 you get 12 hours at least with a fully charged set, and I
would expect the same for a Geko, since the specs are pretty similar,
and the Foretrex is based on the Geko. And NOT in battery-save mode!

However, as has been mentioned, to get this reliably you need a decent
(ie microprocessor controlled) charger to maintain them.

comments. Alas, 900mA cells and a controlled charger which monitors

You need to go through a few charge/discharge cycles with new
batteries before they reach maximum capacity.
