Good thought, Dora. Cyndi, when they start with the excuses (that's what they'll be, not reasons), ask them to wait a sec while you get pencil and paper because you want to write it down so you can share it with the people who care because they'll never believe it unless you get it exactly right.
Hmmm... I might just make little slips with excuses pre-written on them and make each offender draw one out of the hat.

I *love* the way you think, Michael!

I like that one too...but it would require more effort on my part than I care to offer.
My most likely response will be "you were missed". Then a change of subject would be best...sometimes my 'honest' opinions get lost on the clueless.

Lost on the clueless is good; make it work for you!!! I think *subtle* is the best approach for Monday. Let them figure the rest out, if they care enough to do it. In the mean time, you can put a guilt trip on every individual to extract a hefty donation. *Hurt* will go miles for you in this case.... but don't let them know *as a group* that no one showed up. I'm positive this wasn't a group conspiracy. The individuals were probably thinking "*I* won't be missed, because everyone else is going".
After you extract their money, you can make up a reason to cancel the group run. They'll be off the hook and you'll have a decent donation.

That's what I think also? Everyone assumed they themselves wouldn't be missed because all the others would be there? I also just wonder if somehow they mistakenly thought there was less obligation since it wasn't a purely social event? Sadly, R.S.V.P. is greek to so many these days. If they actually do remember to respond (a miracle unto itself) they don't seem to feel any obligation to the host or hostess to act on their response. One wants to scream sometimes, huh?

That's pretty much the conclusion that I've come up with too.
I guess what sucks is that I had higher expectations out of a few of them... Live, learn and 'get over it'. <G>

I would stick to the truth. I would not insinuate that several attended, it is too easy to find out that it did not happen. I would only mention that because there were so many that stayed away, the Charity Event that you had so carefully planned had not generated the expected money. I would also mention that a lot of time, effort AND money, money that would have done much good had it been sent to charity, had been lost for perishable food. Since so much had been wasted in the endeavor to raise funds for the charity, tell them or at least hint that if someone wanted to make a contribution, it would be gladly accepted. In case this would be difficult for you, because you fear that they may think you will not forward all of it, just say that even small checks would be welcome, made out to the Heart Association.

That is **fabulous**, Michael! Not subtle, but a bit playful. After each one draws one, Cyndi should write their name on it, in scarlet ink, and tack it up on the bulletin board. Their very own scarlet letter :-) EXCELLENT!
TammyM, would never have the stones to do it but heartily approves :-)

Just my 2 cents.
Margaret, your sane 2 cents are worth a million. It is a graceful, noncombative solution to a hurtful and uncaring mess.

I LOVE it. Oh... I'd do it in a heartbeat where I used to work. It was a never ending parade of donations to "my son's/daughter's <insert organization here>, "my organization", "our adopted family" and on and on and on. There were holiday pot lucks, brunches and dinners drumming up donations. Yep, I would not have one tiny twitch doing exactly what you said. Evil minds think alike 😉

Boo. You are wimping out. Someone will come up and offer an apology, more likely more of an excuse, and ask how it went. That will be your opportunity to tell the person that not one person showed up and that not one person called to cancel, leaving you to do all that work and go to all that expense for nothing. That person will then realize how lame their excuse is and how poor their manners are.

Yes. I am. I hope somebody actually does extend an apology...I'd hate to think I really work with people that poorly mannered...
I don't know that making that many more people upset will really accomplish anything. Granted, I'm not being put up for sainthood next week but forgiveness is a virtue that I probable should develop. I have a feeling I may have other rough days/events ahead, within my lifetime. <G> I'm still all over the place on this - I am absolutely floored and keep hoping that I'll wake up from this and find myself enjoying a great brunch in a couple of hours. Denial is sometimes good. 🙂

Probably, at this point, every one of them thinks all the others showed up. Although all of them standing you up is a heluva lot more of a bummer than only one, each one of them is only one. Let *them* figure out how to make it up to you.
