I've heard that lifters should eat 1 gram of protein per pound of body
weight. I´m 207 pounds. How on earth can a person consume 210 grams of
protein a day? A turkey sandwich has about 13 grams of protein. Most
protein supplements I´ve seen have about 20 grams of protein. Are you
supposed to have 10 protein shakes a day?

Right now, I'm ingesting around 400g of protein, 500g of carbs, and 75-100g
of fat. I drink 2 or 3 servings of CytoGainer a day. Mixed with skim milk,
one serving contains 73g of protein, 104g carbs (of which, only 5g are
sugar), and 6g of fat. It's made by the same people that make Muscle Milk,
    so it's mmm, mmm good.

Sorry to hear that. Your body can't process/use the amino acids
in 400g of protein during a 24 hour period. You are wasting
    money on protein, big time.

not to get too philosophical but who really knows who's right with this
stuff? unless you've done the research yourself, then you've heard the info
2nd-, 3rd-, 4th-hand and you have no idea if what you're hearing is correct.
i'm not defending or picking on anyone in particular here, but i take just
about anything here with a grain of salt. there are just way too many
self-promoters in this arena with products to sell or egos to feed that you
really have no idea what someone's agenda is. and moreover, what is
"right"? this place is good for getting general guidelines to work by, but
what works for YOU you're just gonna have to find out on your own, and that
will be the right answer for you. if someone says .3 g/lb bodyweight works
for them then it's not wrong for them, is it?

back to the question at hand, for myself, i found that i do need ~1 g
protein per lb bodyweight, to gain muscle. i've never tried more than that
because i never felt the need. get some whey protein and get a membership
to BJ's or similar and stock up on bulk chicken breast, lean ground beef,
fish, eggs, milk, etc. if you these things regularly, it's not hard to get
your protein totals up. this is coming from someone who's 6'6", 250 lbs.

Some of us in MFW have read the actual studies -- not the hype from
supplement web sites -- but articles published in peer-reviewed
journals. And some of us understand the physiological processes
    involved in protein metabolism.

"locker" is not in either of those categories.

You seem to have invented the "eat as much protein as you like diet".
400g of protein is 1600 calories or theabouts. So what you are
claiming is that I can eat as much protein as I like and not put on
    any weight - cool.

    Sadly it's not true

No. It's winter, and I really don't care about gaining a little fat. I would
rather eat too much protein and carbs and maximize the muscle growth
potential, than eat too little and deprive myself. I can cut before summer.
And if I weren't on anything, I wouldn't eat that much.

He was directing that at "locker." A purely logical argument. Never
mind trying to explain deamination and gluconeogenesis to "locker."
He surely recognizes that protein can be metabolized, even if he
doesn't understand how, and he probably knows that the energy value is
about 4 kcal/gm. If the body can't possibly metabolize 400 grams per

    fat? I don't think so.

The statement was technically incorrect but given the context it is a safe
assumption that "process/use" refers specifically to muscle growth, and not
merely to digestion and caloric content.

I don't think so, either. But, 400g is only 2g/lb for me. Will says at least
1.7g/lb for strength exercisers. http://www.brinkzone.com/protein.html So,
    I'm not too far off.

Your post is confusing as to whom it is directed, but I'll assume it's
    towards me.

No. It's winter, and I really don't care about gaining a little fat. I
    would
rather eat too much protein and carbs and maximize the muscle growth
potential, than eat too little and deprive myself. I can cut before
    summer.

If the body can't possibly metabolize 400 grams per
day, does that mean one can eat unlimited protein without gaining body
    fat? I don't think so.

The statement was technically incorrect but given the context it is a safe
assumption that "process/use" refers specifically to muscle growth, and not
merely to digestion and caloric content.

You're never going to have a majority of amino acids going to muscle
protein accretion. However, the studies indicate that a substantial
circulating amino acid pool and pulsed increases in the amino acid
pool tend to benefit muscle protein accretion after heavy resistance
training. Any thoughts on how one might accomplish that?

I don't think so, either. But, 400g is only 2g/lb for me. Will says at least
1.7g/lb for strength exercisers. http://www.brinkzone.com/protein.html So,
    I'm not too far off.

Read more closely, John. It's 1.7 grams per KILOGRAM. That was Peter
Lemon's recommendation back in 1991, and as recently as 2000.[1,2]
And in a review in 2004, Tipton and Wolfe indicate that 2.5-3.0 grams
per kilogram is plenty for strength athletes and those seeking
    muscular hypertrophy.[3]

Intake of easily digestible proteins at intervals? I always wonder what the
cost/benefit ratio is. Are we talking about ingesting massive amounts of
extra protein to put on an extra two ounces of muscle or five pounds over
    six months?

Please see the references in my earlier post. One of them is free:

Resistance training is a key element, and timing intake around
training sessions may be an important factor.
