  1. Why in God's green earth would someone want to mess around with their normal
hormonal balance? Especially growth hormone? The human body shows a decline
in growth hormone with time. This is called aging. We all age. It is quite
    normal.
You start inserting adjustments in the levels of HG, and you begin to risk
side effects from the hormone directly, and more importantly, you begin to
mess the the pituitary's regulatory mechanism. This is the sort of unnatural
stimulus that eggs on abnormal cell endocrine output, and subsequently cell
function, and possibly cellular replication. (CANCER)
I think you're asking for trouble.

We all age. It is quite normal.

Why would someone want to mess around with their immune
system? Many dietary supplements are sold as "boosters" of
the immune system, but why would you want to change the level
it is normally at? Some diseases (the autoimmune diseases, such
as lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma)
are caused by an over-active immune system attacking certain
cell types inappropriately. What makes you think you have
better judgement than your own body, with regard to how
activated your immune system should be?

Can we agree that all supplements touted as "boosters" for
the immune system should be avoided like the plague?

Sure. Also none of these so called immune system "boosters"
have been proven to work so there is another good reason
    to avoid them.

Unless they can specify exactly how it "boosts" it. Just
providing "essential amino acids and minerals" as building blocks
    doesn't qualify.

Echinacea is both an immediate booster (phagocytocytic activity)
and a long-term suppressant (mast cell production of histamines).
Take your pick. The short term effect makes it useful for that
cruddy cough after a cold virus gets through, and the second
makes it the herbal OTC equivalent of Claritin.

Steroids are old news, although they are still definitely around -- with
some new & very creative ways to circumvent legal prescription. ["Love

The stuff I wonder about includes "hemodilators", creatine, HGH, & other OTC

No, I don't think so. Acromegaly occurs when their is massive overproduction
of GH. The levels used here are "normal" or slightly above "normal" for a
growing adolescent. But adults don't need to grow a foot in the next two
years. Our Gh stays regulated exactly at the level it is needed to be IMO.

I can understand why athletes going for the top of the heap in their
sports -- especially making the big bucks -- take the risks. There's always
someone younger, quicker, stronger to stay ahead of. They weigh the options
& make the decisions, often paying a price years later.

I see amateurs taking some of these supplements in the hopes of improving
their performance, & wonder if playing a better game of soccer on Sundays or
lifting a little more weight to impress the ladies at the gym & the beach is
worth taking the risk a pro making hundreds of thousands (even millions) of
    dollars a year does.

It's actually a case where the risks are the same but the potential
benefits are much smaller. What you have to remember is that in athletics,
the higher the level you're competing at, the smaller the difference
between a winning and losing performance. If you're a world-class
competitor, you're going to seriously consider anything that could give you
a hundredth-of-a-percent advantage, because the difference between winning
and losing could be a .01% difference in performance.

But to a high school athlete or a "weekend warrior," a .01% improvement in
performance means diddly squat; the ordinary differences in performance
among your competitors are *much* greater than that, since you don't have
the tremendous selection (cream-skimming) for ability and training that you
do in the pros. So doing something because the pros do it is nothing more
than wannabe behavior; you get all the risks but none of the benefits.
It's what a programmer would call "micro-optimization"; a lot of cost for
    very little return.
