for those unfamiliar...it's in beta now...however basically every word you

It's okay, Lance - calm down. Open up a normal www.google.com
search page and type in "running". Now, when you press enter look
on the side. Ads. Targeted by your text. Been happening for a while.

    This isn't a "new-OMG-we're-being-assimilated-by-google" thing.
This type of direct ads has gone on for years, in many examples on
    the internet.

No one's making you click on them, but I fail to see the annoyance.
These ads are targeted to be at lease remotely relevant. That's the
idea behind it all. Would you rather see viagara ads ad nauseum?

i don't believe you're correct david. you're intermixing the internet
and the usenet. two different things. note we're on the usenet and my
points are in that context. the usenet has not be commercialized like
this to my knowledge by readers (software apps...including google).
    the internet has.

reading a persons content has never previously, to my knowledge, came
with having ads feed to you.....on the usenet...by any usenet reading
    app.

Do you really think there's a difference now? It's 2005, big
guy, not bbs days. People looking at newsgroups via google
are on the "internet" as far as anything relevant to this topic
is concerned. It's been like that since deja, even before.

David. Can you name another environment (portal/app/whatever)
accessing a person to newsgroups that advertises to them based on the
content of a posting in a newsgroup?

I believe this is a first...and something like this is very newsworthy
(on a business level) scaled out. The public creates content free
for Google, Google gets Industry to pay them for Ads driven on what
they get free from us. What a business model!

I think there is a difference David. It's the "blurring of the usenet
& internet". The usenet never produced "clutter" and commercial
advertising. It's only a matter of time when others don't follow
    Googles model too...just watch.

It's just an illustration of how it's getting harder and harder to find
forums where people can gather....free of commercial [censored] being driven
to them. Right now it's a few ads....mark my words, in 18-24
months....all news readers will be doing this...and the product
    categories will explode.

With every posting will be advertising tying in Books, Foods, Brands,
etc...addressing the content/product category in every remote way....

  5. Use an NNTP reader -- the way Usenet was MEANT to be read -- and you'll
never have to worry about it again ... just the occasional spam or troll.
Ads are the price you pay, I guess, for the convenience of a FREE web-
    based interface and search service.

For heavens sake Lance, if you will insist on using a web browser and
reading usenets postings on a web archive, you can hardly be surprised at
    getting web based targeted advertising.

you did not speak to my point tim and i sense the business community is
hoping people react/respond just like you, and fail to "see and
understand it". It's not the reader, it's not the ads coming at me,
that's not it tim. it's the business model exploiting my speech, my
every word for profit. that's it tim and is independent of whatever
    reading/posting application a person uses.

example with rec.running. I think AirLyndon (with the speed kills
sig) and what's his name out in San Diego and some of you others are
professional running coaches and or trainers, etc. Regardless of what
app you use to post.....Google is sifting through your wisdom &
knowledge, marrying it to a business interested in piggybacking on your
wisdom & knowledge to sell their products.

It's one thing to freely share wisdom and knowledge in a non-commercial
forum of like minded enthusiast. It's another thing to now have lots
of money being made on your wisdom and knowledge and guess what.....you
don't get a dime! Get it now tim? Now think bigger and scale this
out. Soon Amazon and B&N will have topical book ads. AirLyndon will
be selling books for Amazon, B&N, etc., written by other trainers and
coaches (who get a royalty payment) he may or may not know and may or
may not be up to his par with running knowledge....yet....AirLyndon's
speech is making everyone money. Where's AirLyndon's royalty? He
might actually have more knowledge and be working better to sell the
book his speech triggers than the author!

Right now Doug Freese's speech commonly touches on health maintenance
stuff. Many of you diagnose & trouble shoot health stuff for people.
Well...I noticed Doug's speech was used by Google to envoke emergency
health care/maintenace businesses. There was a thread about shoes and
the word calus (sic?) was triggering dozens of ads for calus removal
    products, care, podiatrist, etc.

I own intellectual property in RL and receive royalities so I am very
sensitive & aware when others are profiting on my wisdom/knowledge. On
principle it strikes as very discomforting to know my speech is
creating value and revenue. Yes, I would be a little unnerved if I
were a running professional of some sort....and speculated how much
value and profit my speech generated for Google and any number of
companies over the course of a year.....while I, the critical link in
    the chain, got _zero!_.

An imaginary theoretical audit of Doug Frees's speech on rec.running
over the course of 1 year might show he made $50 for Google and
Hundreds of dollars for Amazon, Health Care Centers, Asics,
RoadRunnersports, Podiatrist, etc. His speech can easily drive this
revenue model...and guess what...it can be minded forever so this
business model would apply to speech Doug made on the usenet backward
and going forward, 2002 or 2007 and annually re-occuring.

And Dot? Dot's speech will soon be working for travel agencies and
selling tourism & adventure packages to Alaska! (and he might be
anti-tourist invasion of Alaska ecco system!) I think this will
ultimately cause knowledgeable people to steer away from the usenet and
go to website forums where industry is not profiting of our goodwill
intent to simply share/spread knowledge. Most of us are enthusiast
of Running and don't actually make our living in this realm.

However if I somehow make made my living in a way related to
running....I think I would feel extremely uncomfortable distributing my
wisdom and knowledge here...only to learn virtually in realtime my
speech is generating value and revenue...in my field...for
everyone...except me (forever going forward). Industry is hoping
people diminish this model...and can't see the big picture enormity of
    it all.

I understand my speech here is not my copywritten intellectual
property....but the ramifications of this are unbelievable. I will be
curious to see in the months to come...when Google's newsreader is out
of Beta....what kind of companies are profiting on Donovan and you very
knowledged contributors. Moreso...I'm going to get a kick out of the
books and fitness programs you're selling.

Personally in all honesty...in areas of my profession....I could not
stomach seeing my speech get leveraged in on and exploited for the
    commercial gain of everyone.....except me.

And you ought to be getting down on your knees and thanking Google for
    attempting to target their advertising.

You posted you words to a world wide public forum and now you're upset that
Google in exchange for providing a free archiving service and web based
newsgroup access is attempting to make money from it?? The fact the Google
are tageting their advertising by using keywords is a vast improvement over
blanket advertising. If you really can't cope with the idea that someone
might be making money out of your words on usenet then there's always the
X-no archive option or you could quit posting. The fact is, from the day
you're born until the day you die someone somewhere is trying to make money
    out of information about you.

People have being collecting personal information about you for years (and
not paying you a penny for it) in an attempt to better target their
advertising. Why should you expect the internet to be any different? I
think you fail to see and understand commercial realities Lance. Do you

You posted you words to a world wide public forum and now you're upset that
Google in exchange for providing a free archiving service and web based
    newsgroup access

Screw Google. No one asked them to archive
anything as far as I know. Using google to
post or read messages? It only takes 7 hours
for a post to show up. I use my ISP's newserver
and newsfeed, which I PAY for. And here's a clue
for you: I _own_ all the words I write. My ISP
owns coprights to anything on their servers,
meaning no one has any legal right to my words
minus my permission. That's legal reality, which
trumps your commercial reality. © Tom Phillips,

Maybe I'm wrong, but I recall reading that legally anything you wrote
yourself and posted on usenet was in the public domain.

    Eh, check that. See:

    http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html

However, I still think it's silly to whine about people archiving and
making available, even with advertising, stuff you put out on usenet.
You can always sue google if you disagree and see how it turns out, but
I think they have more money for lawyers than you do :-)

You're wrong. Commercial use isn't authorized
simply because you've posted to a public forum.
You're confusing editorial use with for profit
    use...

nice to see someone who values their speech. gotta though tip you off
to something also new w/google. this stuff is posting up in
near-realtime now. no kidding. goggle is serious about this
attacking of the usenet & generating revenue from public speech.

a friend wihtin the industry tells me that's part of the
objective....to strike the iron while it's "hot" (in marketing).
apparently that's a premium value on "freshness" of usenet speech in
selling advertising to it. for example...people ask questions about
buying services & products and google wants to capture that speech &
response to it with their advertises asap (knowing a purchase my be
only moments away...or inducing a purchase immediately).

as in..."what shoes should I buy" the responses will trigger
advertising enabling the ability to secure/purchase what you're reading
now. Hence Donovan can post about how great his Mizuno running shoes
are....and adjacent to his speech (knowledge & wisdom) are numerous
links wherein the purchase can be made.

Donovan's speech gave rise to the ads, he then sold the shoe with his
knowledge and wisdom, google made money & the vendor made money...and
Donovan did not get a penny (even though he was the critical link in
the orchestration of it all). In terms of pure money making...it's a
    great business model.

Theoretically and how I suppose it's sold to advertisers....from point
of "inquiry to merchandizing"....heck...can all be wrapped up in
minutes...theoretically. To deliver this level of
performance...Google beefed up and the postings are now real time!

With the new Google Groups Beta http://groups-beta.google.com, posts show
    up very quickly.

I think most people's complaints about
google have to do with it's new interface,
which sucks. But there appears there may
be an unterior motive for the revamp...
