You seem to be confusing news servers with news readers. You
need a news server to give you access to Usenet since AOL no
longer provides you with one.

You then need a news reader to read the posts -- Outlook Express,
Agent, Thunderbird (Mozilla), or one of the others. OE and
Thunderbird and some of the others are free software. Agent
is very good but has a one-time fee to buy.

AOL provided you with both a news server and a news reader
(albeit a pretty lousy one).

A news server will deliver all the posts -- a news reader will allow
you to filter posts, and some news readers provide more options
for this than others.

You probably wll have to pay a fee to sign up for a news server.
But you can easily find a free news reader and download and install
the software. You probably have one, Outlook Express, on your
computer right now.

For heaven's sakes, just use your OE like any sensible person would. It is
free, works fine and you can filter with it to your heart's content if you
are brainless enough to want to do it. All those who advised you to pay for
a newsreader are totally insane and have more money than brains. Surely your
ISP services your OE? If not, get a new ISP!

It doesn't matter much. They are both pretty worthless.

I know absolutely nothing about AOL, but I can tell you that OE is the
greatest thing to come along since sliced bread. Frankly, I also like IE too
even though I regularly gets lots of viruses every time I use it. But let's
face it, Microsoft would not be as great as it is if it weren't doing
something right. The few Mac systems I have seen around do not seem to work
with anything much. Microsoft Windows is the only way to go and anyone who
tells you otherwise is a blooming idiot.

Now that you have gotten the word from on high by a computer user who has
been into this for a couple of years you can relax and go with the flow.
Yea, get Windows XP, the IE browser and the OE mail server. You might also
want the Windows Media Player too if you like music and radio. Now you will
have everything you will ever need. No charge! Just part of my noblesse
oblige to all the ignoramuses of the world.

proxyconn internet accelerator. I have had no connection problems since
switching from aohell. The total for the isp, accelerator and usenet is
still less than aol dial up.

Mozilla FireFox is far better than Internet Exploiter and if you stop
using IE then you will learn that MS is full of problems and you will
want to change you news client to something else as well. While
Thundebird may not be the best out there it is free and less prone to
security problems that plague Outleak Exploder.

Agreed on just about everything there. I only use IE because Microsuck
forces you to use it for interactive updating. I turn on every
anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall program I have before using IE
and have never had a virus using Firefox or Thunderbird.

That is only because a lot of sites are written to be most compatible
with IE and use the latest Java script, Active-X, etc., and that stuff
may look like nice eye candy, but it opens the door for virus attacks
and other nasties.
I am using Thunderbird now and your text does not have the bar, but
rather right arrows. It probably depends on what level of HTML or XML is
in the body of the message. I just looked at your source code and it
looks like just plain text, so no problem.
It all depends on what you want, V-8 or 4 cylinder.

Firefox is great once all the right extentions are installed, especially
Flashblock and AdBlock. To me, no newsreader compares to slrn.
