Not if you have carbon bars. ODIs work only with aluminium (or other metal) bars because they deform carbon bars at the clamps and have a tendency to cause catastrophic failure.

Got any documentation of this? My (trusted) LBS tells me otherwise and I'm curious about the data available to support or refute claims on either side.

He comes on a little strong at times, but he's right in "this" instance. I would choose a carbon bar with reinforced ends for ODI grips at the very least.

I've heard this about this combination (ODI lock-ons and carbon bars) from several unofficial (yet respectable) sources and I'm curious where it comes from. Googling turned up much speculation and some warnings against over tightening on carbon bars but no actual data or even an isolated example of failure due to lock on grips. I'm not saying those examples don't exist, just that I can't find them. I'd like to know what the specifics are.

But, instead of playing Doubting Thomas, you could actually call them and ask them what the deal is. Or Easton. I'm sure they've got tech support people who would be able to explain it in detail for you.
The clamps warp the carbon weakening it all of the way around the bar, kind of like what a pipe cutter does, only with warpage instead of a cut. That warpage can and has caused catastrophic failure. I certainly don't want my grip pinching the bar off as I land a jump, or am railing a rough corer. I've had carbon fail on me before and it's all of a sudden-like. My friend Kevin had ODIs on a Monkey Lite and pulled the grips to swap for new ones and tossed the bars after seeing major warpage and what seemed like a hairline crack that he caught just in time.

here's the correlative data you were asking for Matt....
Dont think I'd care if it was just for light XC stuff, or if i knew exactly how tight i was tightening the clamps and it wasnt that much, but for anything bigger id be wary, and any manufacturer who doesnt know what monkey is assembling the bar setup wont take the risk. IMO unless you overtighten the clamp you are not going to increase the chances of failure as a) carbon bars are very strong if compressed from all outer angles - a bit like an egg and b) the forces your clamp needs to be at to hold a grip on (i.e. not overtightened) are less than i can apply with my hands, and they dont tell you to not use your hands on the bar 🙂 Personally I've snapped a zoom alu bar (clipped a tree leaning into a bend at 35mph), and bent a steely (hard landing of a jump on my trials machine) and they werent fun experiences.
I dont see the need for lock-on grips - my grips always stick - clean the bar, buy good quality grips, use carb cleaner to slip the grip on - bingo. Even mates who bring bikes round with slipping grips soon find that if they are old grips they are dead anyway and need replacing, or they stick when the bar is prepared correctly.
