I have a history of a heart attack 10.5 years ago and had an angoplasty. I
take a lot of medicine, but I feel fine and am able to exercise daily at a
high level without any problem. I've been taking 1.6 mg of folic acid for
some time to lower my homocysteine level. It had been about 10 -12, but
yesterday at the doctor's office the reading was 15.1, even though I'd been
taking 1.6 mg. per day for at least 6 months. My doctor told me that I
should now raise the dose to 5 mg. per day to try to lower the homocysteine.
    Is this appropriate? Thanks.

You should also be on high dose B12 and B6. Moreover, animal protein which
tends to be higher in methionine should be avoided in your case.

  2. How much -- I presently am taking 50 mg. of B6 and 250 mcg. of B12. Should
    I be taking more?

Typically 1000 mcg of B12 is orally administered for elevated homocysteine.

  4. FYI, I've been taking:

    3.2 mg Folic
    500 mcg B12
    100mg B6

since 1995, all in powdered capsule form approx 20 minutes before
breakfast, and my homocysteine levels dropped from 22 to 7.5.

Is it unnecessary? From the same article you posted:

"The researchers note in their report that the study may not have been long
enough to see a big effect, and the results of other ongoing trials with longer
follow-up periods should provide more answers.

In a statement, Dr. Guido Schnyder of Bern University in Switzerland, who was
not involved in the research, said "the authors rightly suggest that health
policies with regard to folic acid supplementation should await the results of
ongoing large trials with adequate follow-up times and numbers of patients."

FWIW, I lowered my homocysteine level from 13 to less than 8 by taking an
additional 400mcg of folic acid 1x daily. At less than $6.00 for a bottle of 400
pills, I think it is an inexpensive way to lower a potentially dangerous
    condition.

Type in folic acid at www.heartcenteronline.com and read some more about the
    potential benefits of folic acid....

I'll continue to this "unnecessary med"...

Why do that? What does it do?

    jen

Homocysteine is one of the products of methionine catabolism (breakdown). If
the body has a problem metabolizing homocysteine, then it is desirable to
    minimize methionine intake.
