I bought a 7100 and commute on that. I have a rack on the rear which
doubles as a fender, and bought a removable fender (SKS Shockboard)
from the LBS for the front. It clicks into something that is mounted
on the fork, and I press a button to remove it.

I have a set of the Planet Bike fenders think they're ok. They don't
rattle and I don't notice them.

I only use it when it rain is a threat, like today here in NYC.

Just about all of my miles are on a limestone grey dust trail. They
really cut down on the amount of dust my bike and me have to eat. They
probably cut my bike maintenance in half.

If you have to pull your front wheel a lot for locking or shoving into the
back of a car--sure-that's a much better solution than nothing. Full
fenders can be a PITA in such situations.

Yup, mine are Zefals, but not much different--just standard full coverage
fenders. Don't really think about them much except when I maintain my
chain and brakes and remember I'm having to service them much less often.
I've got 35mm fenders with 28mm tires underneath and I've made sure that
the curve of the fender perfectly fits tightly (+/- 2mm) to the tires.
Looks nicer than fenderless--not "freddy" at all. A guy asked me the other
day--what are those "silver strips" covering my tires...LOL

main bike's V-brakes; in fact I had to <ugh> cut notches
in the fenders, which to me is an ugly, last resort kludge.
I need the rear fender "up" a little on top, to clear the
generator wheel.

Hmmm, I occasionally bolt on my Basta fork mount generator/light assembly
and have had no problems with clearance. I'm using the skinny 35mm
mudguards though--I'm assuming you're using 45mm? With what size tire?

The notches don't have to look *too* bad if you clean them up with a file
or dremel. They can't look any worse than my zip ties...

26x1.5 slicks (it's an old rigid-forked MTB.) And the
seatstay bridge with the caliper brake hole in which to
mount a fender is just too close to the tire and the rear
V-brake. The old centre-pull cantis with non-threaded-post
pads are so comparatively easy to work around -- you can
spread the brake arms a little wide so they don't pinch the
fender, and still get the brake pads up close to the rim.

The V-brake arms mostly hide the notches.
But I still know they're there.

Speaking of looks, I wrapped some external wiring down
one fender strut to my fender-mounted tail light. But
it still kinda hangs a little loosely on there.

I wonder -- if I could slip some heat-shrink tubing over
the strut & wires ...

The tail light does look good where it is on the fender,
though.
