IIRC, Specialized had a similar episode years ago (one of the old
"Sub6" variants, I believe).

But oh, I pity the poor souls who won't get the news! Instead of a
helmet that's at its certified protection limit if they topple while
standing still, straight and tall...

....they've got a helmet that is probably at its limit if they topple
while standing still, slightly bent over.

(Provided it doesn't result in a head-twisting glancing blow, of
course. Even the "good" helmets aren't certified against the
rotations from glancing blows!)

What *most* of the industry has discovered is that, in order to pass the
safety tests, it requires about 280 grams of material. The higher-end Giro
helmets, which people naturally assume to be lighter weight than the
less-expensive models, are in fact the same weight, sometimes even a bit
heavier. The primary benefit to the higher-end helmets is ventilation, and
it's a difficult engineering proposition to make a helmet that does what
it's supposed to do (no, not just look good, but actually provide some
benefit in a crash) with really wide vents.

When you reduce the weight of the helmet, well, you can see what happens.
Why they couldn't figure this out in testing before they went into
production is a mystery. Probably cost.
