As long as it doesn't actually hurt his performance, he'll use whatever
he's paid to use, just like any sponsored professional athlete. As long
as it doesn't put his bike over its desired weight, and it shifts
    cleanly, nothing else really matters.

That's a ridiculous statement, and you know it. Him and the team are paid
to ride Shimano, nothing more, nothing less. Obviously, it works well
enough to win 5 TdF's (and possible 6 or 7 even), but it has nothing to do
with his personal preference. Of course, Lance and the Blue Train boys
don't use the same DA group you buy off the shelf. They get the 'special'
    stuff made just for him/them.

Also completely ridiculous. You've obviously never had a Campy bike (or you
had one and you were incapable of working on it yourself, so it wasn't setup
properly), or you would know this just isn't true in the least. Campy's
bearings are the best in the business.

Yeah, I just sold a nice GIOS with 9spd Daytona on it. It was a stealth
    bike. No noise period.

I bought a CX bike last year on a whim and it has slowly taken over position
as my main ride. It has XTR except hubs (Hugi) and shifters which are
Ultegra. It is teh off road capability I love, not the parts.

This combination is as dialed in as it will ever be (I wrenched in a shop
for two years) and it still doesn't come close to the solid crisp shifts of
the Campy stuff. The Shimano action is too light. I find it easy to
over-shift (up the cogs) and the down shifts are spongy (down).

I was hoping that a DA shifter upgrade would help.

Maybe I will get a 2005 compact Campy group instead.

    Very loud!

Seems to be well built though.

No argument, although I haven't verified your figure. But if he WANTED
to ride Campy, he could certainly arrange for a switch in sponsorship,
no? Campagnolo would probably pay pretty close to the same figure if
Lance asked them to. Hell, Lance could probably buy six dozen complete
Record gruppos for the whole team and not even have a component sponsor
    if he didn't like Shimano.

What is rediculous is some peoples blind allegiance to campy. I'm a
big fan of campy stuff for their history & contribution to the sport
but shamano is good also. In fact i think that the new d/a is the best
out there. Don't forget Campy has produced their share of junk
    products over the years.

It's always bugged me that nobody seems to want to say CAMPAGNOLO,
opting instead for "campy". It's awful-sounding, vaguely derisive, and
cements in my mind the stereotype of the Ugly American utterly
unwilling to learn even a single word of a language that isn't his
own. Besides, I've never heard anyone say "Shimmy" for SHIMANO.

I've always preferred the British abbreviation, "Campag," which
besides being a staightforward truncation of the name, sounds better
    to my ear.

Either one sounds horribly pretentious though.

    Dear Luigi,

Shimano enthusiasts are rumoured to have a theory that
explains why Campagnolo aficionados refer to their beloved
machinery in a way that "sounds horribly pretentious."

Shimano enthusiasts are also said to believe that "Campy" is
not just a truncation, but a cruel pun.

    Etymologically,

    Carl Fogel

Ooooh, it always bugs me when people misuse the term "Ugly American."

If you had actually read the book, you'd know that the "Ugly American"=20
was the _good guy_, the Peace-Corps type who figured out how to make an=20
irrigation pump out of bicycle parts.

The locals called him "ugly" affectionately because he was not good=20
looking, even though he was good-hearted and benificent, a noble=20
American hero, sort of a Benjamin Linder precursor. (If you're an=20
American and don't know who Benjamin Linder was, shame on you!)

I prefer that too, though it isn't a "straightforward truncation" of a=20
proper pronunciation of Campagnolo. There is no hard "g" in Campagnolo.
