You're not alone, I groaned out loud when I saw that one. So I just need a Xenon, Mirage or Veloce or rear mech to help me achieve supercar performance on my bike! What's happening over there at Campag!!?
On a related moan, what's happenin to their finishing standards? I bought a Veloce rear mech a few months ago (obviously seduced by the marketing) and the finish on the gear cage was positively crude; looked like it had been filed to a finish by a one-armed monkey! Checked others since then and it seems to be a general problem.
I hate to say it (being a long-time Campy fan) but it comes nowhere near the standard of finish on the Ultegra/105 rear mech.

Which is why I said Ultegra / 105.
But you're missing the point, which was asking why the quality of finishing on Campag gear has dropped off. I have an 8yr old Mirage mech that has a much higher standard of finish than the current Veloce.
Not that it matters from a functional point of view, of course, but finishing quality was one area that used to be cited as something that set Campagnolo apart, as opposed to Supercar based advertising campaigns.
Whilst we're on the subject, does anybody think the recent Campag hubs, especially the front Centaur/Chorus are butt ugly?!
The original Centaur was the Off Road groupset.. IIRC.

I don't think it makes much sense to attempt to compare quality by position in the range, when the point is that the quality doesn't correspond to position in the range, but in general I'd agree that 105 and Veloce are roughly equivalent.
Campagnolo derailleurs tend to be more expensive than Shimano derailleurs of a similar nominal level, while the shifters compensate by being not only cheaper, but also repairable.

Gradually migratign the road bike to an all black configuration. I should get the new chainset (TA Vega Light) this week. I already have a black seatpost and stem, black frame and so on..

If you're set on Mirage, you'll find the shifters (9-speed) actually index pretty well with Shimano 7-speed cassette and rear derailleur, so you could get the shifters first, then upgrade everything else later.
If you just want black, Shimano 105 has a black option. I tend to prefer Shimano hubs and cassettes and Campagnolo shifters, and I generally end up with Shimano derailleurs because they're inexpensive.
