Geographically, it is about a 3500 km bicycle ride between the two

If Guy Chapman has confused the University of Washington with Washington
University, he will NEVER hear the end of it from me - and I do mean
NEVER! The two universities are entirely different from one another and
even an Englishman has no excuse for ever confusing them. Washington is a
revered name in America and there is even a George Washington University
so named located in Washington, D.C. Good Grief! Surely Guy did not make
a mistake of this magnitude....
And of course, George W. Bush played a significant role in the creation of
the State of Washington.

Tom, Rock Island County Illinois does not really work. The reason it does
not work is because there are very few counties in the US that anyone knows
anything about. I can think of only a few: Cook County, Dade County and the
most famous of them all - Manhattan. Of course Manhattan is a borough, but
I believe that is the equivalent of a county.
My recommendation is: "Tom Sherman - Rock Island Illinois"
If Illinois were not so totally dominated by Chicago you could just go with
Tom Sherman - Illinois, but if you do that everyone will think Chicago. I
can just use Minnesota and no one is automatically going to think Twin
Cities. Rock Island is a sufficiently large city so that others in the world
will know where you are from, but not so large that you can omit Illinois.
Well, as you know by now, only I appreciate these little niceties. The rest
of ARBR's are mostly just slobs and have no clue as to what location might
mean, either in reality or symbolically. Place names have magic for me. I
have often traveled at great expense and hardship merely to arrive at a
famous place name. That is because I am a Romanticist at heart.
My very favorite destination of all time was Venice. My God, that place just
reeks of magic. It is my favorite city in all the world. When I was there I
would get up very early in the morning and just wander the streets and
canals until nightfall. The place was so magical it just about drove me
crazy. I note that it was Stravinsky's favorite city too.
The one place I have always wanted to go which I never have was to cross the
Sahara by camel caravan to Timbuktu. I think I would like to go to Timbuktu
and die there, sort of like the old codger in the Tennessee William's play,
"The Night of the Iguana." The place name Timbuktu just enthralls me. But
maybe it is better to dream about the magic of place names and go to one's
grave a Romanticist than to be disillusioned by reality.
Anyone on this group ever been to Timbuktu? But you have to cross the Sahara
by camel caravan to get there. Flying there on a jet airplane doesn't count.
That is because the getting there is actually more important than the being
there.
