This morning I was commuting to work and reached a 4 way stop. I'm
going to go straight and no other cars are at the intersection
although a cop car is coming down the street on the right. I leave
the intersection, the cop is still aproaching, gets to the
intersection, stops very briefly and then makes a right turn --
while I'm already going through the intersection (a little more than
half way through at this point). No sirens or anything at any time
on the cop car. I have to veer left to avoid his car and come within
an inch or two of his door (with me somewhat shakily at this
    point). He continues on.

If you cross post this message we won't have to see it in each
newsgroup that it appears, it already having been seen in the first
event. There is benefit for all if you do that.

I'm not sure what you mean. I did not cross post it, which you state,
but then you say "we won't have to see it in each newsgroup that it appears"
implying that I did cross post. Not sure what point you're trying to make.

I came across this item in both
    rec.bicycles.tech
    rec.bicycles.misc
and it appeared as a new message because it was not cross posted...
but this message is and will be flagged as "new" only once and then it
appeas as "read" in the other newsgroup.

I only see it in r.b.m. I do, however, see your cross-post in r.b.t.
    I'm still confused.

You'll see it only once if you have your reader set to "Hide read or iqnored
messages" (OE lingo). The first event will happen in the ng you first
viewed the post in, so if you switch to another group the original message
    will be hidden (if cross-posted).

  6. More clearly. Cross-posted messages all have the same Message-ID.
Newsreaders can be configured to ignore messages with IDs that have
    already been viewed elsewhere.

does anyone know if thunderbird has this capibility? and how to turn it
    on if it does
if not, what are some of the "better" ones that do?

Thunderbird does have this ability; somewhere in the preferences is an
option to "filter read messages" Then only unread messages appear when
    you open the newsgroup.
Pan also has this ability. Pan also seems to be able to filter out
messages even if they have been read in another group! So cross-posted
    messages appear only once.
    Don't know about others.

Fully deserving of an exclamation mark, given that this is something all
halfway decent newsreaders have done forever.

Seriously. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but I've never heard of a
newsreader that doesn't handle crosspostings correctly.

    I never saw the original message. I read r.b.tech, I don't read r.b.misc.

Jobst is saying that crossposting is better than multiposting. I agree
with that. If you look up those terms, I think you'll understand what he
is saying. But since I didn't see the original post, I don't think you
    multiposted.

This doesn't explain why, when a message was posted to r.b.m (only, I
looked at the original item's headers) *you* cross-posted it into
r.b.t in your response; the logic is entirely absent. The original
message was in one newsgroup. There was no Followups-to: header in
that message, so it would not have caused a cross-posted response
without intervention. Unless your newsreader is massively broken,
even you should have seen it in only one group until you cross-posted
    it.

Since *this* matter is off-topic for the original subject, I have
removed r.b.m from the header of this post to keep the other group's
    thread from needlessly expanding.

I don't think it knows how. Thunderbird is OK, but it has lots of its
own quirks. I'm thinking of switching back to OE, myself (after 9 mos so
far). Firefox is OK, unless you need to visit a MS site. I've had
shopping carts auto-empty a few times, too, but I think that's been
fixed now that FF is like 10% of clients.

Thanks all for the SIXTEEN posts on cross posting, none on Charles'
    post.

My view is that cops are just people driving their car and I don't
think he came close to you cuz he's a cop. I get dusted off by cars all
the time, turning in front of me while I'm in the bike lane going
straight frequently. Most car drivers are lazy and inattentive and they
just don't notice bicycles. Maybe when gas is $6 per gallon and scarce
and they have to walk or take the bus they will see how quickly
    bicycles 'get there'.
