Have you ever seen a poppy? The whole pod is an inch long by about 2/3
of an inch wise. The "latex" is in a thin layer between the outer skin
of the pod and the inner part of the pod, which is filled with yellow
fibrous stuff. If you cut into the center of the pod, you've gone too
deep and will only find the yellow fibers plant stuff. The latex, or
raw opium is MUCH smaller in quantity than the yellow fibers, which
might weigh a quarter gram, no more. The latex is in between the inner
fibers and the outer skin, a mere scratch away from the surface.
Believe me....the latex in one poppy is less than a drop.

There is one species of papovar called "Gigantum" that produces a large
poppy on a 10 foot stalk. The pod is about the siae of a pigeon egg,
considerably bigger than other poppies. Im guessing there might be two
or three drops of collectable latex in those. But, the most common
poppies grown in Afghanistan, Iran, India and China are the white and
purple ones that only grow a foot or so tall, with the small pods. If
you saw a pod, you'd know that there's no way 1/4 oz. of anything could
fit in it, much less in just a layer between the outer skin and the
    inner fiberous part.

Yes, you can re-scrape for several days and even dry the yellow fiberous
stuff inside the pod and smoke it, although it is pretty third rate
stuff, like smoking pot seeds is third rate compared to the buds, say.

I did a LOT of research on this, LOL, trust me. But, oh, how I wish you
    were right.
    A quarter oz? Man...that's a LOT of O.
One successful flower would supply me for life. But..sadly, it aint so.

Ok, but pick up this book:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0914171674/qid=1122913227/s
    r=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-1351803-4138445?v=glance&s=books

You can get a bit more than just a drop of opium latex from a poppy head
    according to THIS book.

The trick is, the poppy head continues to produce MORE latex over
several days and with proper harvesting technique, it can be contiuously
scraped daily for, if I remember correctly, about 2 weeks. I read the
book over a year ago. :-)

It's a totally different harvest technique than the standard vertical
cuts where you only get one shot at the poppy head.

I've not tried it, but it makes sense?

Latex is the sap of the plant. It produces it constantly until the plant
is dead. A latex is a specific kind of sap that can be found in many
plants, most famously, the rubber tree (and all ficus family plants).
There isn't just what's there at any given moment. Take some and more
    will come along later.

    dissapointing.

I would like to read the book, tho, if my library has it on tape. Thanks

    Ok. :-)

If not, when I find my copy, I can try to make a recording for you.

I'm just not sure where it is at the moment. I may have given it away
when I decided not to play around with opium.......

The method involved making a series of small, horizontal cuts starting
at the TOP of the pod. Do it in the morning and wait 12 hours for the
sap to ooze out and let it dry before scraping it. Don't cut too deeply
into the pod, just thru the surface skin.

The next day, make another series of horizontal cuts BELOW the cuts you
    made the day before.

Continue each day until you reach the bottom of the pod. This allows sap
to come up and be made in the pod for several days to increase opiate
    production.

You also have to make sure the pod is "ripe". Wait until the ring at the
base of the pod turns dark.

Like I said, I've never tried it as I decided it was not something I
really wanted to mess with, but I still have a fascination with this
kind of thing so remembered what I'd read.

And who knows if the knowlege might come in handy someday? Knowlege is
power according to Auntie Mame! ;-)
