usually buy the Merb's Bionic apples (be still my heart). I've got all the stuff ready except I'm wondering about the caramels. My question to the group: Which caramels are the best? I've got a couple of bags of the Kraft caramels but there have to be other kinds/types of caramels. I'm not necessarily trying to duplicate the Merb's apples but want something delicious and stringy when you bite into it.

I know this is totally off what you're saying, but does anyone remember making them as a kid with caramel sheets that you somehow heated and "wrapped" onto the apple? Do they still make those?

"Wrapples"? I think you just left them out at room temp. to make them pliable enough to wrap around the apples. I don't remember actually heating them up. I thought they were pretty good when I was a kid.
Don't know if they're still around or not (haven't looked for 'em in the stores).

I've seen those. They come with the sticks for the apples, too, IIRC. I don't like apples, otherwise I would have paid more attention.

I made those with my daughter last week. Sheets of caramel between waxed paper. you peel it off, wrap the apples, and put in a very low oven for 5 minutes, then cool on wax paper.

So they do still exist! God, I can't believe I remember using them. How funny. Oh, and they did come with the sticks!

I've never heard of those, they must be really good.

I've tried Kraft and Brach's caramels, and I prefer Kraft; seems creamier to me. Something I haven't done for years is make caramel fondue and dip apple slices in it. Yum and no caramel up my nose...

I have seen those things in the produce section. I've never used them. Wayne suggested the recipe on the back of the Kraft caramels. I wanted something different and I used Nexis' recipe except I substituted chopped pecans for the toffee bits and omitted the dark chocolate. I haven't tried them yet but they look good. I also did a few from the recipe on the Kraft bag as Barb, Wayne and a couple of others suggested. We'll see which is best. Maybe next year I'll do a caramel apple tasting for a party theme 😉
