Finally, many of these promotional web sites make the claim that people are
more likely to survive cancer if they do not have conventional treatments.
This is an appalling thing to say. All of us who have worked as health
professionals with cancer patients will have seen people who have not come
forward for treatment. They can have terrible physical problems from their
untreated cancer. Treatment can be given to help with symptoms and improve
quality of life as well as to try to cure. Of course we can't cure
everyone. But that is our aim and why we strive to develop new treatments
year on year. Overall about 1 in 3 men, 4 in 10 women and 7 in 10 children
now survive a diagnosis of cancer. These overall statistics hide the great
success in particular types of cancer, such as testicular cancer and
Hodgkin's disease, which have very high cure rates. This would not be true
without the development of conventional treatments.
