geoff introduced a new added loop (same route but we turned right at
Yan Yean Rd and out to Yarrambat/Whittlesea/Mernda

Not quite as far as Whittlesea.
For those not there today... The new loop started by turning right toward
YanYean instead of turning left toward Greensborough as was the case last
week. We then continued to Doreen passing thru Yarrambat along the way. We
turned left at Doreen, then left at Mernda then south along Plenty Road
until Latrobe Uni Bundoora where we turned left onto Kingsbury Drive. At
the end of this road we turned right and rejoined the previous weeks route
which headed for Fairfield via Ivanhoe.

Normally the bunch would have turned left at the Papermill but we turned
right instead. Why? For two reasons the first one was it was about time for
me to start heading home and second we wanted to check out the progress on
the new Northcote Velodrome complex. At the velodrome we were unable to see
much because of the exterior of the building is now pretty much complete and
there was too much reflection off the glass to see inside.

I think the main problem with getting any downhill speed happening was the
windchill factor. The faster we went the colder we got.

What time did you leave at. We left Westfield Doncaster at 7:30. We waited
a little longer just in case Tony was running late.

Cold!!! Check my reply to flyingdutch if you want to know how cold it was.
I suppose we should be grateful we live in Melbourne not Canberra.

I guess you'll be getting some outer layers for future early morning rides
🙂 It is important to maintain your core body temperature during rides
such as today's. To give you an example as to what you might need, this
morning I was out there in Woollen Gloves under normal mitts, Thermal
Undershirt, Jersey, Arm Warmers, Normal length bibs with three quarter
length leg warmers underneath, Windproof vest, Toe Warmers (full booties
would have been better), and the all important Roubaix headband to keep the
ears warm. This was only just adequate for me in the first part of the
ride.

btw. How did the new shoes and pedals go?

Polar 720i with Cadence Sensor.
The stats above are only a subset of the total available stats.
All data except for the Max, Min and Avg Temperatures can be uploaded to a
PC for further graphical analysis. On the PC displayed temperature data is
that which is recorded when the user manually marks a lap or waypoint during
the course of a ride.

I left at 7:30 from Bulleen. The route I took to K Ground was about was
about 4km less than you guys so I probably only missed you by 5 mins or so.

1 degree, yikes!! 5 degrees is usually my limit before I need to cover
the arms and legs so I figured it must have been something like that.

They went well. My arches were aching a bit but I think that was just my
(lack of) pedalling style. Once I started thinking about pulling up on
the pedals on the upstroke the aching went away. Guess it will take a
couple of weeks to get used to. But what a difference on the uphill,
especially when I stand up on the pedals.

the weather was, and how light it was (then again, we are past the winter
solstice). No way I'm going to do an 80km ride at that time of day though.
Fortunately it's all too far away from St Kilda.

as we were freezing in a valley out there, i was vagueing off
wondering whether it would be warmer along beach rd. the only thing
that seems to make it REALLY cold down there is wind...

Maybe, maybe not. The beach is usually a degree or so cooler than inland (a
modest boon in summer). Southerly winds are always a [censored] in winter no
matter where you are.

I can't really recommend anywhere in particular because I'm a little out of
touch with the current prices for these things. Once you have one you tend
to stop shopping around. I got mine from www.dickinson.com.au who are in
Fitzroy. My guess is the price of the 720i will start to drop as the new
model, 725i, starts to replace it so there should be some good prices
starting to appear.
Before you buy from OS you might want to check if the warranty will still be
honoured here in Aust. just in case you require it.
Also to complete the package you will want to get yourself the infra-red
gizmo for uploading your data to a PC and a Cadence Sensor Kit. (and if you
really really want the "power output sensor kit"😉

I would never class the 720i as a replacement for a wired cycle computer as
it, being wireless, can sometimes give incorrect readings when riding
anywhere near HT powerlines or Trams. I use it to complement the data from
the wired computer and record the ride data for later analysis. I also find
the delay in displaying Cadence info slightly annoying on the 720i so I
generally use the wired computer for this as it gives realtime info.

I downloaded last week's and calling it Bunch Ride

Yep, apparently so.
Thats why I bought from NK in Canberra who are a warranty agent and repairer
for Polar.
No hassles buying with Visa over phone and delivered to Townsville 3 days
later. All up S150 was $65 less than best price quoted here. They use a
courier service and package has to be signed for which can be a problem
hanging around waiting.

I checked out this site, it is cheaper than pursuit performance site...
s720i is going for $492. i'll keep checking... not sure whether to spend
another 30 and get the s725 though.

www.dickinson.com.au can have the item delivered direct to you from pursuit
performance. I ordered 720i by phone mid afternoon and I had it in my hand
by 9am the next morning. I have bought a couple of other items from Shane
at dickinson.com.au since then and on all occasions he was able to better
the price of any Australian webshop that I used for a comparison. Just ask
him what his BEST price is and the see what he comes back to you with.
