Most people do fear death and will live under conditions approaching
slavery - as long as they are permitted to live. The Indians of the
Americas could not be effectively enslaved, and so Negroes were brought
to the New World to do the slave labor. The Negroes were willing to be
slaves because they wanted to live.
I do have Native American blood in me, along with the admittedly hard
headed Irish and French on my mother's side, so that might explain a bit
of my attitude. Also, since I have already outlived some of my friends and
acquaintances, and have just topped my father in law, (heart attack at
57), I figure the best reason to go on is the wife and kids, grand kids,
etc.
Bill, I remember when I passed my father's age some years ago and thought I
did not have any right to live longer than he did. But life goes on and I
continue to be amused and bemused by life. You do not need to have a wife,
kids and grand kids to find life worth living.
As much as I hate the French for being such treasonous [censored] to what the
West stands for, I do think the Irish and the French are not a bad mix. They
are both essentially Celts which puts them at loggerheads with the
Anglo-Saxons (English).
I don't identify with the French as much as I do my 1/16 (or 1/32)
native American blood, which was that of Native American royalty.
My great, great grandmother was a princess, daughter of the grand chief
of the Huron nation, the same nation slaughtered by the American
military to conquer the 'savages' for the white man. I believe the
savages were the white man shooting the fleeing Indians in the back,
men, women, and children. Lincoln was part of that army unit, so no
matter what is ever said about him, I can never consider him a great man
to have taken part in such obvious genocide. The French, at least my
great, great grandfather was working with the Indians in a much more
civilized manner and as a reward he was allowed to marry the chief's
daughter, hence my heritage there. None of my ancestors were ever
involved in the blatant genocide committed by the white man, nor were
any involved in the southern slavery trade. I feel no shame of my
ancestral background.

Your freedom is circumscribed by the greater requirements of the society
of which you are a part. In fact, without the society within which you
live, there would be no freedom at all. It would be nothing but kill and
be killed - as it is in the world of nature.
Do you know that even 'suicide' is a crime, but how they gonna punish ya?
Sure I don't go out packing a gun or knife and there is a need to enforce
peace with a police presence, but I don't want to give up my soul to them
because there is a one in 100,000 chance I might be killed by a terrorist.
That is about what the WTC 9/11 events work out to with nearly 300 million
people living in this country. In fact about that many people die every
day of natural causes or accidents.
Is all this government protection of a nation of cowards worth the
freedoms we are giving up? I think not.
You need to distinguish between natural causes and accidents and the intent
of evildoers who mean to kill you if they can. I repeat, all people will
chose security over freedom. In fact, it has been the lot of most people in
most civilizations to live their lives with little or no freedom.
Not all people since I do not fall within the cowards group by a large
margin. I will walk into the middle of a group of obvious outlaw Harley
riders and begin to talk motorcycles without fear. I would carry a rifle
and become a vigilante if need be to protect my family and freedoms.
Having done close to 200 MPH on a motorcycle wearing no helmet takes
balls of steel and I don't care how many people can't fathom going that
fast on a motorcycle since I know I was between 170-200. I will sky dive
when I get the money to spare for the lessons. is this sane for a 57
year old? More so than for an 18 year old since I have already raised a
family and now can take risks and endanger only the remainder of my
life, not all of it. I still like to test my reflexes against
rattlesnakes and catch them behind the head while they are still
thinking of striking. Nobody lives forever and I am not about to fret
over it, and life in a rest home is never going to happen for me.

Do you recall how a few years ago a couple of snipers kept the entire
Washington D.C. area at bay. I can assure you that life is not worth living
under such circumstances.
I can assure you that I would take my chances. The odds of being hit are
probably less than 1 in 100, and the odds of that being fatal are maybe
1 in 3.

I do think we are going to have give up much of our freedom in years to come
because of the kind of technology which makes it possible for a few
individuals to kill en masse.
The world is already vastly overpopulated.

Young people will do whatever they are trained to do by their upbringing.
This has been proven over and over by history. Your greatest killers are
18 year old kids.
A sorry truth I have to admit to but that goes back to bad parenting,
single parent homes, and a lot of problems that did not exist when I (we)
were young.
You do not want a military made up of older men. You want them to be young
because they will kill without compunction or reflection. Young men
everywhere tend to be killers. I think it must be ingrained in our natures.
[censored] sapiens = killer apes!
With the technology to kill many more people. I do not think conflicts
will be the ultimate thinner of the population, but a new type of virus
that incubates for a week or so, gets spread worldwide due to excess air
travel, and then turns out to be 100% (even 99%) lethal. I suspect that
nature will be the great equalizer, via global warming and horrendous
storms or pandemic disease outbreaks that spread before the CDC and WHO
have a clue. Sorry that last one rhymed.
