(Hydroelectric power does produce methane from rotting vegetation from
fluctuating water levels though, so does have a greenhouse effect.)

Actually that could explain his numbers. Four cyclists, say three of
them driving modest cars, produce as much CO2 as one SUV between them.

Yes, but as a human I am going to eat food whether I then ride my
bike or not. As someone who is purely a leisure and utilitarian
cyclist I do not eat any more food than I would if I didn't ride a
bike.

In my case, it's because I think I'd be a terrible driver, and wouldn't
trust myself in control of a couple of tons of metal. I guess if I
wanted to own a car, I might force myself, but I don't particularly want
to own a money pit, either.

I don;t own a car (also never had a driving lesson :-), but I certainly own a money pit, 4 in fact (5 if you include SWMBO :-) a house (Ok technically I'm renting it from the mortgage company), and 3 bikes, there's alwyas some nice bit of kit I could buy, and once you start on 'nice bits of kit' (TM) they can get very expensive, and then you *need* a nice frame to put the 'nice bits of kit' (TM) on as your original frame just isn't up to it :-)

Please don't say bikes are not money pits :-) (although I can justify absolutely everything I want to own)

Sorry, I haven't been following this thread. How much do four
drivers/passengers produce?

I suppose that cyclists do carry on producing CO2 for longer, because
of their life expectancy
