The previous thread on RAAM truely disgusted me. These RAAM competitors
are the true cyclists of today. I remember a thread a couple years ago,
when someone posted that Lance was a Fred because of his ugly white socks.
By how they judged RAAM, they would conclude that Poulidor, Anquetil, Coppi,
even Merckx would be considered Freds by their funky dress and equipment.
RBR has been exposed as posers, that spend more time laying in bed looking
at bike catalogs, than out in the snow doing a 200 k, before nightfall.

Bartali, etc. have more in common with RAAM riders than the Tour riders of
today. I think it was Ercole Baldini who tied a rag to his top tube and
pulled on it with his teeth so that he could still ride with a broken
collarbone. Not quite a head crane but close--and he was respected for his
determination.

a mullet all the way down to their ass or with a huge hook strapped to their
back from which they hung a strap to suspend their head. But while I posted
on that thread, I didn't comment on matters of attire or personal style.

I'll definately stand by that. I also commented on the displays of
monumental stupidity ... like going non-stop for the first 48 hours when
you've got 8 or more days to ride ... like urging on a rider who's in kidney
failure and who is QUITE OBVIOUSLY in no condition to continue safely.I never fail to be inspired when I hear the stories and watch the efforts of
the folks at Ironman Hawaii. What was on display in that RAAM broadcast was
something completely different. I found it rather ugly. (I could really
get into doing the team thing, though. That was cool.)Oh, and I couldn't do my 200K in the snow yesterday. It didn't snow here.

determination.It was Fiorenzo Magni in the last stage of the Giro of 1956 (he finished 2d
in the GC). But it was only a collarbone. What about Umberto Drei who
finished 99th in the 5th stage of the Tour of 1948 with a broken thighbone?
It's true that the day after he didn't appear at the start, but IMO a hero
