  1. RBM and ARBR were both subject recently to criminal spamming and only RBM
was able to handle the situation. It succeeded and ARBR failed for two
    reasons as I see it.

First, RBM took action and complained in sufficient numbers to the ISP and
other service providers to take down the blog website and thereby stop the
criminal spamming. RBM showed some guts whereas ARBR showed nothing but
    yellow. Big difference!

Second, RBM is a much larger newsgroup than ARBR and the criminal spamming
did not make that much of an impact on the group overall. It was sort of
lost in the large number of posts that arrive on that newsgroup daily. ARBR
is a much smaller group and so it was simply overwhelmed by the criminal
spamming. That was not our fault, but it goes to show how vulnerable a
newsgroup is if it is small.

Whether anyone has learned any lessons from the experience is debatable as
newsgroups are constantly changing over time. However, I hope and trust that
some of us at least have learned something.

    Ed Dolan - Minnesota

    Mr. Dolan,

You certainly made some noise on ARBR about how useless everyone was in
not dealing with this issue, but did you do anything yourself, like
    contacting the service provider?

And while you seem to be behaving these days, you cannot deny that
before this spammer started infecting the group last year you yourself
were accused of being the main reason why so many people stopped
contributing to ARBR. You defended yourself by saying such things as "I
am cleaning up this group, chasing off the Liberal scum and their
worthless banter" or words to that effect.

And you must admit that you went way over the top in an effort to
provide what you called "entertainment" and "livening up a boring old
group", engaging in some pretty vile remarks, some of which were
outright racist or misogynist. And when others asked you to cease you
defied them one by one, not for a moment caring about how the group at
large was feeling, but revelling in your own ego, much like the current
spammer. (Anyone interested can just Google Mr. Dolan within ARBR to
see many of this offending posts.)

While I am glad you have stuck to on-topic or at least non-inflammatory
comments, please consider that your earlier behaviour brought the whole
group down into the gutter, leaving it open to be further exploited by
the recent inane behaviour. A higher standard, even in the
uncontrolled land that is Usenet, is a worthy thing, no? I don't wish
to pick a fight with you, but I've been reading and posting to ARBR for
a very long time, and am saddened that those with varying degrees of
what comes across as mental illness feel the need to [censored] all over it
(or any group, for that matter).

  3. Mark,

I wonder if Ed ever stopped to think why no one will back him. Of
    couse not, reality sucks!

Both Ed's are vandal trolls and let's face it, the menatally ill like
these two will never see it!

ARBR is history! Look at how the postings have gone to nothing since
Dolan joined and Sherman taunted him. Ask anybody on BROL why they
left ARBR and their answer will be Ed Dolan and/or Tom Sherman, not Ed
Gin. If you REALLY want talk about recumbents go to BROL. Why don't
you see Dolan and Sherman there? Perhaps because they really don't
want to talk about recumbents. They are just big fish in a little
    pond!

The ironic thing about Ed Gin is that Dolan can't even begin to compete
    with him!

Until the two Ed's leave and Tom gets a life, this place will just
    continue to be a wasteland.

If you want to talk about recumbents you can do it here and at
recumbents.com. BROL is an old aged home for sycophants and toadies, where

I will translate to the way a reviewer would write it:

I road a ___ yesterday. The ___ is an innovative design with some
unusual features. The welds are not the work of art that one sees on a
TIG welded bike from Waterford, but are certainly structurally
adequate. The handling is quick and sporty, and the seat is a

Jeez Tom, if you ever get tired of being an engineer, you could write for
BROL full time. Ol' Larry Varney couldn't have said it better. If you could
forget how to spell and proofread, you could even write for Bob Bryant. You
still need to work on being more equivocal though.

    Mr. Dolan,

You certainly made some noise on ARBR about how useless everyone was in
not dealing with this issue, but did you do anything yourself, like
    contacting the service provider?

I am fairly new to the computer and the Internet and what I know about it
all you could put in a thimble with room to spare. However, there were many
others on ARBR who were quite sophisticated on these matters and the
question is did they or did they not do anything about it. I surmise that
they did not. Instead, what they did was to flee to BROL. And so ARBR
perished for want of a little action.

    Quoted message said:

I was never a spammer or a troll. I was merely contentious. That is all I
was ever guilty of. ARBR was a cesspool of liberal posting before I showed
up and it was also full of one-liner types of posts which were totally
worthless. A very few thought they owned this group and acted accordingly.
They posted nothing but the most asinine greetings and other trivial
    nonsense.

By all means, go back and have a look at anything I have ever written and
you will discover it was all [censored] for tat. Those who can't take a bit of
contention have no business being on a newsgroup in the first place. To
compare me in any way with the current spammer, who is no doubt a criminal
and crazy to boot, is insane.

If you think you can come on a newsgroup and just say anything at all that
pops into your head and not be confronted about it by someone, then you are
living in a dream world. Civility will be met with civility and nastiness
will be met with nastiness. That is the way our human nature works.

Yes, you have got the above right, but I have been responsive to individual
correspondents and to the group as a whole. I have wanted the group to
thrive and I have tried to help it to do so. However, I do not like
newsgroups that get taken over by a self-selected few who then dominate it
with senseless personal chatter, much of it of a political nature. All that
Bush bashing that used to go on here was abhorrent and despicable. Thank God
that is no longer the case.

ARBR was taken down by Ed Gin and Associates. They are a crazy bunch of no
good [censored]. Try to think clearly about the matter. The group was doing
just fine until last winter when it fell apart in the space of a month due
to the criminal vandal spammer troll. He forged names and addresses in
addition to posting vile messages that were non-responsive in the extreme.
It amazes me that you and some others are not able see the situation as I
    see it.

Will agree that the reviews on BROL are totally lame! Need we say
    cookie cutter!

Look at the "Bikes of the Year." I don't see anything innovative about
the Stratus XP. They took a sloppy, swayback bike, known for it's
"built-in flex" and put a 26" front wheel on it. Without anybody
really riding the XP, it's crowned as a speedbike. The XP is merely a
touring cruiser with a 26" front wheel. If I want a speedbike I'll buy
    a NoCom.

How bout the Catrike Speed for "Trike of the Year." I've ridded a
Speed and don't feel it is much, if any, faster than my WW. Oh,
slightly smoother design, better welds, but nothing deserving of "Trike
    of the Year."

But then again BROL is a commercial publication that depends on
commercial advertisers. Need we say "Bicycling" magazine!

It's the old, "Take what you need and leave the rest." Unfortunately,
when it comes to the reviews, I'll probably leave everthing.

    Enjoy,

    Perry B

I am told by current NoCom owners that the next generation NoCom may be
too radical to ride on the street. If we are lucky, Kamil will come out
with another bike that is almost as fast as the current NoCom, but more
    real world useable.

This is a case of "The Pot Calling The Kettle Black!"

I would like to advise Perry Butler that envy is one of the worst of all the
vices. Most are born with it and cannot ever be cured of it, short of a
religious conversion. That is why it is so bad.

Perry Butler did absolutely nothing when Ed Gin showed up on ARBR. He ran
and hid like all he other cowards there. Now apparently he is on BROL (a
moderated forum) which is the perfect place for him. He can be coddled
    there
and need not be bothered by Ed Gin and Associates. To compare Mr. Dolan
    and
Mr. Sherman with Ed Gin is totally insane and not worth rebutting.

Ed Gin just uses a different method to gain the same results
    as you and Tom.

The result that Ed Dolan achieved was to enliven the group and to relieve it
of its terminal boredom brought on by the likes of Perry Butler and his ilk.
The result of Ed Gin doing his thing was to cause everyone to flee to BROL.
Not only were the two Eds completely different from one another in their
methods, but also in their results.

The ironic thing about Ed Gin is that Dolan can't even begin to compete
    with him!

At long last, Perry Butler says something that intrgues me. Please go
    into
some detail on how Ed Gin is compettive with me, let alone with any
    sane,
rational human being who is not also a piece of scum.

Look at how you foam at the mouth when discussing Ed Gin!
I don't recall Ed Gin constantly discussing you!

I refer you to the posts of last winter (February) on ARBR where you will
see Ed Gin exposed in all his glory. He acted like a criminal, not just
posting spam but forging names and addresses. Perry never once addresses
these major issues. He is stuck on Ed Dolan instead whose only offense was
that he showed him up to be a typical Minnesota liberal, the very worst kind
of liberal in the entire nation. The jerk probably voted for Humphrey as
often as he could. Need I say more?

But what is the real problem here with Perry Butler? Basically, he is unable
to make discriminations or even think clearly about matters. He is right
that I changed the character of ARBR from what it had been, but I did not
destroy it. It took Ed Gin to do that. But Perry Butler liked ARBR the way
it was, full of political rants from liberals and trivial nonsense from the
old guard. They held sway long enough on ARBR and were running it for
themselves to the exclusion of everyone else. I changed all that and ARBR
has been the better for it, up to the point where it was destroyed by a
criminal vandal troll by the name of Ed Gin.

Any small newsgroup can easily be taken down by criminal conduct by just a
few. It may be that ARBR does not deserve to exist. If so, may it rest in
peace, just another dead newsgroup among thousands.

You are not monitoring the group anymore so you don't know what is going on.
The big drop off in posting was after the Ed Gin episode, not before. Go to
the Google statistics on ARBR and see for yourself.

The answer most definitely will be Ed Gin and all the vile posting he did on
ARBR in addition to his spamming. But he forged names and addresses. That is
what really scared everyone off, most likely including Perry Butler too. RBM
got a small taste of Ed Gin and Associates (the HRS Blogs) recently and they
know whereof I speak. They showed some guts and got rid of him which is more
than ARBR ever did, thanks to Perry Butler and other cowards like him.

I HAVE gone to Google statistics! That's where I got my information.
The big drop off was BEFORE Ed Gin. You started posting to this group
about May 1, 2003. At 2746 posts it was still a healthy group with
MANY contributors. Ninty plus percent of the posts before you came
were about recumbents. One year of your insults later the posting was
down to 1186 and because of YOU and Tom most of the remaining posts
weren't about recumbents. Funny, at this point Ed Gin hadn't started
grabbing your balls yet! So if you are going to talk about Google
statistics at least learn how to use them. They are there, in black
and white, and there is nothing you can do to change them.

Again Ed, ask the people who left why they are gone and they will say
Ed Dolan and/or Tom Sherman. I do converse with many of those who were
here. I have yet to have anyone say Ed Gin.

Poor Perry doesn't understand the difference between a drop-off and a BIG
drop-off. The big drop-off was after Ed Gin, not before. Those earlier
drops-offs were all dead wood clearing out and the nonsensical types like
Earl who only knew how to say hello and goodbye. You can't count those kind
    of idiots you know.

Who should I ask pray tell. Certainly not you as you are biased and
prejudiced against me. I am certainly not going to ask old Cletus Lee, ever
the pontificator who hated anything the least little bit off-topic. How
about those Danes? Weren't they something! No, I can't think of anyone to
ask. Maybe I will ask Tom Sherman and see what he thinks has caused ARBR to
    fall on fallow times.

Those who left on account of me did not deserve to be here in the first
place. Those who left because of Ed Gin left for very good reasons. The
group had become a cesspool of criminal posting. And Perry Butler never did
one damn thing about it while it was happening. He was too fixated on me.

Bottom line. Perry liked the good old days which were anything but. He
cannot adjust to the new regime and so he is on BROL (a moderated forum)
where he is being bored out of his skull. If you want some excitement, you
will come to ARBR. If you want warmed over death, you will go to BROL. There
Larry Varney will entertain you with his "reviews" and Mr. Ball, the owner
of the forum, will insist that you be a liberal.

Mr. Ball of BROL is death on conservatives and thinks they should not even
be riding recumbents, let alone posting to a newsgroup. But that is what
Perry Butler thinks too. He is a Minnesota liberal, the worst kind of
liberal in the world (or did I already say that once or twice before).

If you want to talk about recumbents you can do it here and at
recumbents.com. BROL is an old aged home for sycophants and toadies,
    where
never is heard a...no, no, that's the lyrics to some old cowboy tune.

"Home on the web discussion forum" doesn't quite fit the music. 😉

    the
    seat made my butthole itch.

I will translate to the way a reviewer would write it:

I road a ___ yesterday. The ___ is an innovative design with some
unusual features. The welds are not the work of art that one sees on a
TIG welded bike from Waterford, but are certainly structurally
adequate. The handling is quick and sporty, and the seat is a
    performance oriented design.

Tom, Tom, Tom...you RODE a ___ yesterday. Otherwise that was a great review
and I'm getting an itchy wallet in anticipation of buying one.
