That's not such a stretch. Tyler did go to school at CU, and if I
recall, he owns a home in the Boulder area.

The Altoona Mirror headline noted that he was a former Tour de Toona rider
(once, over ten years ago).

You missed the cutline under the photo of Tyler on the front page of the
print edition:

"TYLER HAMILTON: Ex-teammate of six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong."

Poor sod ... wins Olympic gold and he's still a bridesmaid as far as the
straight media are concerned. He could win the Tour seven times and U.S.
sports desks would still hang that former-Armstrong-teammate tag on him.

As a side note, Colorado College has at least 3 Olympians it can count among
its alumni: Tara Cunningham (weightlifting Gold Medallist in 2000 and
Olympian in 2004), Dede Barry and Alison Dunlap. Not bad for a little
college that is DI in only hockey and women's soccer.

I'll bet more Olympians have attended/graduated from Palmer High School than
any other two schools (elementary, JHS, HS, or college) combined.

But that *is* a very significant part of the "Tyler Hamilton story." It
might be argued that the time he spent supporting Lance's efforts in the TDF
kept him from developing the leadership skills which he says he only
recently acquired from working with Riis. What's unfortunate is that they
don't spend much time talking about that, and generally don't even
acknowledge that age is a very big issue for those planning to win the TDF.
Heck, very few people even seen to realize that Tyler is *older* than Lance!

I'd like to see more stories on athletes in supporting roles who might
otherwise be contenders. What makes them tick? What's their motivation?
Do they enter into such roles with long-range plans to emerge as a leader,
or do some see it as a "safe" role they can play for a number of years? And
is it really any different than people who chose a supporting role in
politics, or business, helping others to succeed?
