  1. Once again, for about the 5th or 6th time, I installed a STI lever set
and found one of the brand new out of the box levers was defective!!
R600 levers, left one was showing the 'standard' drag the big lever
with the small=jamm whole thing. No amount of love or WD-40/lube would
fix it...Coupled with the surley attitude from the guy at shimano
    usa...SO

send a SASE, legal-sized, and I'll send ya some stickers of a parody
    of Calvin peeing on 'shimano'...

SO frustrating....to build the bike and then have to park it while
    shimano 'looks at the lever'...

I've been using the Shimano Dura Ace 9sp "down-tube" indexed shifters for
seven years now, and never had a problem. Very smooth, and has never missed
a shift. Also using the Ultegra rear derailleur. I've heard the STI lever
has had it's share of problems.

  4. The real problem is that Shimano quality control is becoming legendary
for it's crappiness. I've had a half dozen failures of Ultegra STI
levers that I've installed or others I know have on their bikes.

I've personally not had any DuraAce stuff fail but I've gotten some
feedback from others that they've seen some failures.

Now Campy had a bad stretch back there in the C-Record Syncro-I days
but Syncro II was the best operating downtube shifters I've ever used
(and I still have a set on my Bottecchia). Even the Campy Mirage Ergo
shifters are dead squat reliable. Why is it that people aren't putting
A LOT of pressure on Shimano to improve their reliability?

Are the one of whom Peter spoke in his original post:
"Coupled with the surley attitude from the guy at shimano usa" :P

So if someone has a problem with their $30k Chevy the dealer should say:
"Asshat... You should have bought a Cadillac...they work perfectly since day
1."??? Yeah that's a GREAT way to build customer loyalty by telling them
they didn't spend enough and you have to buy top of the line to get decent
    quality.

People shouldn't have to pay an obscene amount of money to get a product
that functions correct initially as well as down the road. Used to be the
difference between component grades was not in reliability but in usability
    (i.e. component "life"😉.

    Just my $0.02

Glad to hear about the one or two shimano lever sets that you have had
experience with work well but I see hundreds and I warranty dozens.

What makes Lance Armstrong's 7 ToF victories so significant?

    1. That he accomplished this feat after recovering from cancer?

    Nope

    2. That he won 7 in a row... a feat no cyclist has ever accomplished?

    Nope

    3. That he won "clean" during a period when doping violations in cycling
    were at their peak?

    Nope

    4. That he won using Shimano components?

    That's it!

BTW, Pete.... wouldn't Tulio Campagnolo peeing on shimano be more
    appropriate?

This reminds me of an unforgettable incident a few years ago a a
well-known Park Ridge, NJ bike shop. I brought my Tommasini in to their
shop to buy an new headset and have it installed. Even though I was an
established customer, the owner looked me in the eye and sneered,"those

So much for building customer loyalty.

I go through bikes like tissue paper (buying and selling all the time).
I have never had a Shimano failure in 25 years of riding MTB or Road
    that was not my fault.

Smashed shifter pods when dirt jumping don't count, now do jammed
Ultegra STI levers after a fall.

I have owned fewer Campy bikes, but likewise no problems.

When you have a bunch of bikes its nice to stick with one or the other
platform - for many people that is what stops them from trying out the
    other brand I suppose.

I wouldn't question Vecchio's experience, I am just saying that not
    everyone encounters problems.

I would have been tempted to punch him in the face. Tommasini's are
awesome. I had one along time ago and selling it was a big mistake.

Most of the shimano levers work just fine altho all will fail
eventually if used enough. BUT I think shimano has had this problem
with 9s levers since they were new but like a good corporation, it is
cheaper for them to warranty than change the design. BUT nothing worse
than having a new lever fail outta the box, as we have seen about 6
times. One was Connie Carpenters new triple DA, one was Dave Scotts,
most others were just customers..poor show tho. Like getting a new car
and have the transmission fail in 50 miles.
