Don't forget that it was only 25+ miles one year due to measurement
error.

Whoops, or something like that:

I think it's unfair to say "god they suck." The Raleigh Marathon has had more than its fair share of
rotten luck. I feel very badly for Butch Robertson, the race director, who does a fabulous job on a
lot of other local races. The core issues are 1) the weather in NC in December is very iffy and 2)
local authorities, for whatever reason, cannot fathom the value of a local marathon, and so they
provide less than stellar support for it.
Butch had to cancel the first year because the Raleigh P.D. told him flatly they were pulling
support because of a snowstorm, even though the storm hadn't occurred yet. The second year, these
same men in blue misdirected the front of the pack off the course, resulting in a less than 26.2
finish. Luckily for those attempting to qualify for Boston, the BAA accepted adjusted times. And
then in 2002, one of the worst ice storms on record had runners tip-toeing over black ice and
running around utility trucks attempting to fix downed power lines.
I hope that Butch finds a title sponsor and that we can start up anew in 2005.
