So since spring began here in Salt Lake City on March 20th we've had 9-10 days of rain in march, 13-30 days in April and 8-12 days in May. I'm not getting the mileage I "need" to! 80 in March, 390 April, and 110 so far in May. My part time/weekend job ended April 17th. With a 10 day vacation at the end of the month (starting next week), there's no way I'm going to get to my goal of 500 miles this month....

Hmmm.... Rain. Not getting mileage. Rain. Not getting mileage? Vacation. Not getting mileage? Hmmmm.....
Sorry, but I'm afraid I don't see the correlation. :p
Thanks for busting my chops!! (That's what frieds are for!) I should have posted this sooner. It's beautiful here today. I have a feeling my lunch time ride is going to run a bit long.... 😄 L
Riding in the rain carries a joy all its own. Nothing strengthens the mind like the feeling that you must be the only S.O.B. tough/crazy enough to be out riding in the cold/rainy/windy conditions. I've had some of my best *feeling* workouts on those days when I had to force myself to ride, and then had to force myself to zone out and find my happy place. 🙂
I know, I know. It's a shame that I got more miles in January than I did in Feb. and more miles in Feb. that I did in March. I thought I had passed the hump with the weather, but I guess not.
But being realtively new to the sport I don't quite have all the clothes I need. Yet. I had a couple of good rides in wet snow. Funny that I was better suited to ride in those conditions than in straight up rain.
I had to make some clothing investments this year myself, in preparation for a Colorado ride in July. I have traditionally been a warm weather or indoor rider before this year. In Kansas City, that pretty much meant May 1st before the weather was consistently warm enough to be able to ride outside.
My fitness and motivation have been much improved this year by being able to add some longer outdoors rides early in the season when the weather would have previously prohibited it.
Speaking of gear, do any of you guys put fenders on your bikes for training rides in the rain/wet? I'm in the process of building a commuter bike and will most likely get some for that. The question is should I get ones that permanetly mount to the commuter bike or ones that are interchangeable....

1st November to 1st of March, fenders for shure on rear wheel. Both in dry and wet conditions. I'm using interchangeable ones, works like a charm.
Rain? It's just a little water. We have a bit of it here in Seattle. Think of it as a getting some good exercise while taking a long shower. By the way, front and rear fenders are nice. It keeps the water off the back and keeps the legs from getting it too. I hear of Seal Skinz. They make waterproof socks and gloves. For rain gear, a water resistant/proof jacket and regular tights do just fine. Oh and a visor on the helmet keeps the rain off the eyes. (That is what they are good for right? Never used one to keep the sun out of the eyes)
Send some rain to Australia please - we need it desperately, most of Australia still in the savage grips of drought and our states water supply down very very low. It's brown and dry everywhere. But those #*%@&# cat heads are still around. Would love to feel the rain on my face when going for a bike ride. Sam
