IIRC, track bikes are meant for just that, to go on a track. there is no real sudden obstacle other
than other riders/racers coming in front of you and falling.but on trails, there are things like hills that may require some way to control speed.
but then, i may be way off. after all, i have no knowledge at all, right?

learn the aspects of how your bike rides so you can ride at speed.
knowing the terrain helps.
It is possible to ride downhill on twisty trails without brakes, but not without disturbing
some soil.(note, most of the downhills in my area are fairly steep, thus base reference for above).

Once you get to really know your bike and the trails you ride, you can control the speed at which
you ride, you can control how you corner and handle the technical aspects of the trail. Its
difficult for me to really say how its done, I just really do it without thinking about it. Once you
catch a flow going, brakes only slow you down.- CA-G
