Racing clincher with loose fit

I can tell you that Specialized folders are unfeasibly
tight, but they stretch after being on the rim for a couple
of weeks. I can now get them onto my Campag Omega V rims
(also notoriously difficult) using thumb pressure alone.

It helps to talc the tube, not to help it slide against the
tyre when inflated (Jobst will devour my soul if I even
suggest such a thing) but because it helps the tyre and tube
slide past the rim while still allowing a decent grip on the
tyre with your thumbs - something dishwashing liquid is
really bad at.

Hutchinson Carbon Comp, Panaracer Stradius Pro are loose-
fitting, IME.

HED says Vredestein and Vittoria Corsa tires are looser
than most.

Rim tape thickness can be important for marginal cases.

I just installed a set of Hutchinson Carbon Comp 700x23s on
some old Matrix rims. These rims have a shallow drop
(valley) and are notoriously difficult on which to mount
some tires, particularly Michelin 700x20s. The Hutchinsons
went on fairly easily.

Funny thing, the Hutchinson 700x23s have an identical
rolling circumference as Michelin 700x20s.

I was in a shop and compared the width of several folding
tires in their folded state. The 700x23 Michelins were
clearly wider than the 700x23 Hutchinsons and some other
brand I forget. IME Michelins are true-size or a bit larger
and the others were undersized.

The worst example I had was an old Specialized Turbo labeled
700x25, but the raised print molded into the rubber said 20-
622, which was more accurate.

I have a Hutchinson Carbon Comp 700x23 rear and a Michelin
Axial Pro 700x20 front. Same rim on both ends. The rear
measures exactly 23mm with digital caliper. The front
appears significantly narrower, although I don't remember
measuring it. It sure was harder to mount!
