Every year, somebody HAS to bring this up, like it's some sort of
revelation.

Considering the primary responsibility of USACycling is to serve as the
national governing body under the IOC umbrella, and therefore to
prepare national teams for participation in the olympics, their focus
is on those aspects of cycling which are included in the olympics.

If 'cross is ever included in the olympics, USAC will start funding a
team. Till that day, the racers are on their own.

we have the same issue in Canada. You would think that with all the
employees and programs the CCA has it wouldn't be too hard to give
Worlds qualifiers (they do have a qualification criteria) a plane
ticket and a jersey.

But maybe it can't work that way and the funding they have is earmarked
for certain programs.

Maybe the US should just ebay the slots off. Fantasy camp sort of
thing: average age, probably 45 or so, maybe older (not that far about
the USCF average, I suspect).

Which won't happen as long as cycling is seen by the IOC as a "summer" sport.
Even if they did decide to put on a 'cross race at the summer games, no decent
'crossers would show up due to it being six months from anything resembling a peak
for anyone good.

It's just bike racing. I sometimes think the whole sport would be better
if there was no money in being really good at it.

Be that as it may, how many members of the national CX squad in your
country are so unsponsored as to actually see getting to the CX worlds
as a net cost rather than a profitable event? Maybe the U23s?

I don't think there should be some per se expectation that qualifying
for the CX worlds should equate to a free ride, and certainly not from
USA Cycling.

We're not talking a million dollars here. It's a good corporate
sponsorship opportunity, or an easy grassroots project. This year the
Canadian nationals were held about three hours from my house (most of
that by ferry boat), so I went. the organizers did a few fundraising
activities with proceeds going to a "get our riders

My general feeling about World championship races is summed up by this

In Canada, things are downright weird. Greg Reain, reigning Men's champ,
is going, but the other two podium riders (Kabush and Toulouse,
teammates on the Maxxis MTB team) are not going, and I have to assume
it's because for them, CX is a sideshow that takes time away from their
training and racing in MTB and road.

On the women's side, NONE of the women's podium is going!

been around Santa Barbara recently, training with Shawn Milne, so clearly
his focus has turned toward road.
