Hey, put together a team riding it on MTB fixies, that would create some publicity. 🙂

Was it the Duncan we know and love who rode his 38:14 FIXED commuter
machine on the RRR ride a while back? I've heard stories is all..

I hope I'm the Duncan that is known and loved. I did do the MAD ride
recently on my fixed commuter with a 36:14, is that close enough?
To try and make myself sound slightly less stupid than I might, I did the
MAD ride about 10 years ago and it was a piece of [censored] so I thought it'd be
more interesting on a fixie. After a few comments as we rode off I realised
I was in for some pain. Turns out the course is completely different now...
It's now a 60 km firetrail loop with I would estimate between 1000-2000
metres of climbing including the very steep and very rutted pauls plummet
(?) from the first ORCA book.
The only modification to my commuter I made for the ride was swapping forks
from the dualy (dukes with knobby and disc brake) and putting a semi slick
on the back. I kept the high gear, no rear brake, 175mm cranks and 53 cm
semi flat bars.
The ride took all the firetrail options that seem to run straight up and
down the hills. The first pinch had alomst every muscle in my body aching,
the short bars were no help and I seriously thought something on my bike (or
me) was going to fail catastrophicaly. The descents on the other side were
almost beyond my top cadence so between maxing out the front brake in the
gravel and the semi slick on the back not quite spinning fast enough there
was a lot of sliding going on.
After that the climbs were mainly long grinds, I had to ride up front a lot
cause I just couldn't slow down. A lot of the descents from there had water
bar jumps, very interesting landing one of these while you're trying to
resist the pedals.
Doing the drop on "paul's plummet" had a few moments. It's a descent that's
difficult on a normal bike so I was a bit apprehensive, to top it off an
insect bit me on the lip as I started. Anyway, after riding the front wheel
in semi skid mode my pedal clipped the edge of a rutt knocking my foot out.
This also sent the back wheel in the air which had the bonus of stopping the
other foot. Not sure how far I rode alternating between an
airborne/skidding rear wheel trying to reclip and aiming for a spinning
pedal but I managed to get it all back under control.
Going back up another climb I think my cadence dropped to sub 20 as I was
stuck in a bunch of guys running 2:1 who were grinding real bad. I was
surprised my knees held out, although I do have a slight glitch in my right
knee since that day.
All in all apart from the climbing it wasn't that bad. Had a tougher time
an hour or so ago carrying a load of shopping and a slab of coopers under my
arm. Not being able to rest the slab on your thigh makes life a lot harder.
Hmm, that went on a bit...

So THAT's why the freewheel was invented! An anti-beer shaking device!!
Get yourself a big-[censored] Fux Deluxe dude.. slab sits on yo' back..
no shake 'n' bake beers! (well, you'd probably hit jumps on the way
back, unlike me, so your beers would still cop a hiding! Pale or Sparkling?)

I've got a backpack that fits a slab but it was full of groceries. It was
as I left I remembered someone here or on aus.moto mentioned that coopers
pale was on special.
No jumps between the shops and home, but doing a wheelie with a slab on the
back is pretty funny. Balance point is with the front wheel only a foot or
so off the ground. Even I'm not silly enough to risk landing back first on
a box of broken bottles.
