  1. I ventured 90min north of Brisbane to Mooloolaba for the big Mooloolaba
Triathlon on the weekend. Took some rec leave from work, and turned it
into a 4-day long weekend, staying in a lovely apartment overlooking
    the ocean on the Esplanade....

Here is my race report - c-&p'ed from my blog
    (absenthusband.blogspot.com)

    ---

    1.5km Swim - 0:31:23
Swim was moved from the beach to the river (due to some humungous wave
action courtesy of Cyclone Wati), so it was a triangular
course in the river bend behind Mooloolaba Wharf (where Underwater
    World
is). There was a HUGE tidal current sweeping around that bend, which
    made navigation pretty tricky.

After watching all the other individual waves go off, and seeing them
all swept to the left, I swam way out to the right hand side. A bit too
much though, because I almost missed the first RH turn!! I went 10m
passed it *doh!*, and had to swim back against the current to get back
to it. Got bashed a few times around the buoy, but then got back on
track. Missed the final buoy as well, for another 10m swim against the
current, but I figured I was getting my money's worth... *grins*, and
was pleased to finally make it out of the water. Time was slower than
anticipated, but I was feeling OK.

    T1 - approx 0:07:30
A long T1 time - but that was due to the 500m (yep, half-a-km) run from
the swim to transition. It was mostly on bitumen road too, which my
    bare
    feet didn't appreciate!!

Finally reached my bike, but when I stopped running, I thought I was
gonna hurl. So took my time and did some deep breathing - by the time I
was dressed and unracking the bike, I felt fine again.

    40km Bike - 1:19:30
Had a great bike ride!!! Nic and the girls were waiting at the top of
the first hill on Buderim Ave (next to the apartments) and gave me a
huge cheer! Wind wasn't too bad, but built up over the morning. I was
comfortably holding 32-38km/h over most of the first half. Turned
around at the 20km mark, and straight into a headwind - yuk!! I was in
the little chainring the whole time on the way back, sitting on around
    27-31km/h.

Lots of packs formed into the headwind on the way back (cheats!!), but
when I passed the drafting 'penalty boxes', they always had at least
half-a-dozen people in them, so the draft-busters were pretty busy!!

Flew back into Mooloolaba, and saw Nic & the girls again down at a cafe
on the Esplanade. Nearly stacked it trying to wave to them as I was
getting my feet out of the bike shoes, and was very pumped to crack
    1:20
for the ride. I wanted to average at least 30km/h and stay relaxed -
    and
    achieved both.

    T2 - approx 0:01:30
Nice quick T2. Whacked the number belt on, put socks on as well for the
10km run, and dashed out for the final leg...

    10km Run - 1:10:16
This was HARD!!!! Ran out feeling OK, but with legs feeling a bit heavy
from the bike. Then straight into the long climb up the hill, which
totally killed me. Legs just died on me, and I struggled to keep any
sort of pace. I knew though that I had heaps of time, so I just
    mentally
locked myself into that slow, 7min/k pace and kept on truckin'...

Legs complained heaps, but after a couple of laps, was very pumped to
climb the hill for the last time on the way home. Saw my 7yo daughter
    Caitlin, who said,
"Where have you been, we've been waiting for HOURS!!" which made me
laugh. She ran with me down the hill for the last time, and then I saw
Nic who was cheering like crazy. Finally made it into the finishing
chute, and pumped the air like crazy with joy and elation at finally
    making it!!

    Total - 3:10:34
A slow time, but the goal was always to finish, and I was very, very
pleased with the result. Learnt heaps about where I'm at with the 3
components, and what I need to do to get better. And most importantly,
had a great time at the race, and an awesome long weekend with Nic and
    the kids.

Apologies to all who are offended by sw#mming or (even worse)
    r#nning....

    Cheers all,
    Abby

    good on ya dude!

my brother was up there for the Mooloolaba Tri, have not got a report yet, but a fairly similar time to him I reckon, although I know his running has improved heaps.... so he might have a slightly better run... top effort though... what age group were you in ? I think he would have been in 35-39 or maybe the next just depends when the date cut-off is.... he always does that race, with some old Brisbane friends... he always [censored] and moans about the head wind 🙂

  3. Well, how was the leg shave? Did you fit right in?

Nice one! I found M'ba to be a pretty difficult race though I didn't tackle it this year. The swim usually is current-affected, the bike is usually windswept and the run is up and down that hill four times. Plus, the temp increases for the run...

    Great effort 🙂

Well, I can tell you that Veet Rasera is an excellent product!!
    *laughs*

The legs fit in - but my bike felt a little intimidated surrounded by
the sea of CF in the transition area!! I've never seen such a
concentration of Zipp wheels in one place before...

But at least now I know I'm a data point in the "its the engine, not
the bike" debate. Was playing tag with a guy for about 10-15km of the
bike - he was a teams cyclist, riding a CF frame, full disc Zipp rear,
and deep rimmed Zipp front. And me comfortably riding along with him on
my Orbea, with Shimano r540 front & r550 rear...

We chatted briefly - then he looked a bit shocked when I waved him
ahead and said I was conserving a bit for the run.. "You're running
after this?! Sh#t, I'd better get a move on..." *hehe*

Oh, and MikeyOz - I was in the male 30-34 category....

    Cheer all,
    Abby

  6. My brothers times, exactly as he gave them to .... he mentioned that the Swim absoluetly sucked on the way back in! due to tides, he rides a carbon fibre bike... Trek Mad-one, that accounts for his only slight quicker bike time. I thought he might of run quicker, im obviously not flogging him hard enough! I'll make him pay next time 🙂

Swim 0:34 (timed at water's edge)
Ride 1:18 (had the extra run from the waters edge in it - bout 3 mins)
    Run 0:55 (knackered)

The Canberra Half Ironman I did, the swim exit was changed because they had a storm come in the week before and there was trees everywhere! Was such joy running 500+ metres in a wet suit and bare feet, he also mentioned the nasty wind on the ride, sounds like a top day!

Non wet-suit race he said as well.... at least the water was salty... again top effort.... 🙂

  7. impure triathalon scum!! I care not! DOn't sully the puity of my sport
with all this jogging and wet stuff!

well done Abby!!! 😄 So when is the next one???

Did you check out the Endura stand while you were there (if so, you may have met my sister!)?

  9. Hey warrwych!

I did checkout the Endura stand - but the race expo was huge so all the
faces may have blended into each other..... The girl there did give me
a few freebie samples though, so say thanks to your sis just in case!!

    Cheers,
    Abby

Abby knows better than to start talking about good gear making you ride faster. Because I'll shut him down. Abby, all you need is matching tyres.

all swept to the left, I swam way out to the right hand side. A bit too
much though, because I almost missed the first RH turn!! I went 10m
passed it *doh!*, and had to swim back against the current to get back

And most importantly,
had a great time at the race, and an awesome long weekend with Nic and
    the kids.

Well done AH, GC-Half-IM your next tri? (just don't tell Tamyka).

He's already told me, and I've already told him that heading elsewhere
for his first half ironman will prove to be better value for money,
    especially for a back-of-midpacker.

    1.5km Swim - 0:31:23
Swim was moved from the beach to the river (due to some humungous wave
action courtesy of Cyclone Wati), so it was a triangular
course in the river bend behind Mooloolaba Wharf (where Underwater
    World
is). There was a HUGE tidal current sweeping around that bend, which
    made navigation pretty tricky.

After watching all the other individual waves go off, and seeing them
all swept to the left, I swam way out to the right hand side. A bit too

  15. *lmao!*

Back-of-midpacker?!?! That has got to be overstatement of the
    year......

I think back-of-packer is much more accurate. *grins*

    Your call, dude,

would you rather be at the front end of the back of the pack, or the
back end of the mid of the pack?

    Now I"m confused.
