  1. Terse summary:

Race: Holiday 4 Mile, Central Park Weather: Nice. About 32, calm. No damn snow for a change ! Time:
    24:16 AG %: 69.9, PR (DOH!!!! just missed 70 ...) Splits: 6:17 6:15 5:58 5:43 (Yeah!!!!) Split
differential: -51 seconds Comic relief: team mate beats me out for the title of "negative splits
guy" by losing a shoe at the start of the race, and surges by me at the 2 mile mark.

Comments: at the two mile mark at 12:32, I wasn't sure that I was in with a chance at breaking my
previous 24:28 on the same loop. Made my big move in the uphill mile 3 anyway, started reeling them
in. 5:58 ... hmmmm .. not bad. Mile 4 is downhill, so maybe I can maintain that pace, I thought. I
didn't exactly feel comfortable at the 3 mile mark, but I was still moving faster than the people
around me, so I figured something was going right.

1 mile to go. Concentrated, took up my 1 mile race pace posture / running style, and tried to chase
down some runners from the rival clubs who were up ahead. No looking at the watch, just chased them
down as hard as I could. Overtook them with about 400m to go, and put about 3 seconds between me and
them on the last quarter. My body was just screaming at me to stop, and suggesting that if I eased
up, I'd still finish with an OK time. To hell with that -- surged to the finish for an impossibly
    fast final mile.

Happy running and thanks for reading,

  3. Good job Donovan. I was registered for this race but due to a full jam packed day of last minute
holiday shopping and shipping to get done....had to start my day at 8am shopping...and pass on the
race...which ticked me off, especially when I saw the times of my AG and could of contended for that
10th place slot/finish within my AG. Oh well. I did a 9 miler later that night in the park though.

Questions: What did you wear? 32 degrees is that border line where a lot of the competitive runners
still wear only singlets and shorts and gloves at 30-32. No tights and jackets and caps.

Also....your teammate lost his shoe at the start? How? You team guys rarely fail to have everything
checked and ready for the start....did someone from behind step on his heels at the start and gave
him a "flat" or something? How did he lose his shoe? And the guy must of stepped to the side in
losing a shoe at the start or he would have been trampled....2500 people behind him after all.....

I'm in cold weather gear at that temperature: middle-weight tights, warm top (SportHill Explorer),
gloves and lightweight Microfiber hat. This felt about right -- I was cool at the start (struggling
to keep warm) and warm but not hot at the end.

One could wear shorts at that temperature, but last year I had some problems getting borderline
hypothermic especially on the more windy days, so I go with tights for anything under 40 now.

    Don't know exactly.

He says he lost a good two minutes at the start, so that probably means he had to wait until
everyone up to about the 10 minute pace sign went past.

  5. Nice race Donovan. It looks like you've mastered the art of "negative splits".

    Anthony.

Just got the full story in Bob's diary ... someone stepped on his heel at the start.

    Cheers,
