Race 7: Picking a winner

Not a big fan of horse racing myself as I've seen what happens when there's too much money involved in sport. Drug yourself, abuse yourself - fine by me. But leave innocent animals out of it.

I am biased, of course. I had an ex trotter myself who was scared of people and had a massive scar across his tongue which, according to our vet, is common in race horses (when a horse gets his/her tongue above the bit, tie it down with fishing line, barbed wire or anything else you can get a hold of - that's the sort of sh!t some of them do). If he accidentally broke into a trot around people, he would freak out and get scared, yet he happily trotted around in the paddock when he didn't know we were watching from the house (for those who don't know, most trotters are 'taught' a gait called 'pace' which they more often than not wear hobbles for - again, cruel). I could go on, and on... and on.

I'm sure not all of the horses are mistreated (or drugged), but I do believe that a large proportion of them are. Hence I don't support anything even remotely associated with horse racing (other than visiting the horses and giving the ones that aren't too scared a pat at the Exhibition when I go).

I'll second that motion.

In my opinion, though, it just goes to prove that horses are far
superior to humans. Consider: if a dozen horses run around in circles,
thousands of humans will come out to watch. But if a dozen humans run
around in circles, not *one* horse will come out to watch ...

Because that's how I felt riding up Mt Gravatt (twice!!) this

Went for a cruisy ride this morn. to Frankston, saw the evening gowns and gloves set heading for the Flemington trains ...chuckled, groaned !!

The only positive I see from Melb Cup day is less traffic on the road, trouble with those that are driving after about 4pm is the blood alc. level of the drivers and passengers.....

what turned me off horse racing, horse training, horse industry period.....was this....a common training test for thoroughbreds is to put them on an oversize treadmill, tie their nose to the front and slowly crank up the revs...the horse will generally reach a speed on the treadmill far greater than it can naturally run and will continue to increase until it drops.....some do that and make a mess of the treadmill and lose a lot of bark... the other is the use of bi-carbonate of soda, poured down the horses nostril at a strategic time before a big race...it creates lactate latency and the horse runs harder for longer and will exceed max heart rate capability..... no wonder so many drop dead on the course.....( hmmmmm.....WADA maybe the odd athlete and pro cyclist too, so how about a test for that....make soap from their sweat!!)

YUK......leave the poor trusting equine buggers alone and dont feed the industry that abuses them....That's MHO !😠

hoo boy, about 3/4 of my bidon ended up over my head on this morning's
commute. I am so soft. It was only 25 degrees by the time I got into
work. Yucky gusty northerly headwind. I hate living south.

commute. I am so soft. It was only 25 degrees by the time I got into
work. Yucky gusty northerly headwind. I hate living south.

Hah, I was freezing yesterday. Went down to the beach with the family
and decided to do a training swim. That first dive into the water was
shocking, even with a wetsuit on. After a few hundred metres though I'd
warmed up enough to have a go without the wetsuit. Brrr.

On the plus side, I did manage to make a couple of new friends whilst I
was on PT that I otherwise wouldn't have.
