The early seventies,to me, the great braless age. Tube tops and good times for sure..the music and the cars went to [censored] for a time ,but that a matter of taste ,I guess.

Lennon was a great song writer. I have always enjoyed his lyrics. One of my favorites is "In My Life"

There are places I remember

with lovers and friends I still can recall

John Lennon was a musical genius not because of the dope. And the question of the morality of the dopers back then ...... The majority of the ones I knew were far better people then the ones attacking them.
But dope was not really the issue with Lennon....
Cheating and doping is a non-issue in any conversation. .

Whether one took drugs or not is largely irrelevant. How do you know whether Haydn, Mozart, Bach, or Beethoven took drugs? You don't. If they did, does that instantly wipe out any credibility they've had as artistes non-pareil...for centuries? I think not.

Lennon is among those maestros but in a different format of musical expression. There is really no argument otherwise.

OK, thesis statement: Modern society pretty much accepts drug use among musicians and other pop culture figures, and even accepts that drug use may enhance the creative talents of these people, and understands that it's just entertainment and these people have the right (although maybe not in a legal sense) to do whatever they want to do with their bodies even though it may and frequently does cause them physical harm including death.

But modern society does not largely accept drug use among athletes despite the fact that sport is pretty much just entertainment too. I find the hypocrisy interesting and I'm not really sure where I stand on the issue myself, but I enjoy exploring these kinds of parallels.

And no, if Haydn was smoking a water pipe when he wrote "Water Music" that takes nothing away from his creation - but maybe the guy down the street would have written something equally as beautiful if Haydn hadn't bogarted the whole bowl. The world will never know.
