Just a paper map which gets wet and soggy and blows away because I can't be
bothered to buy a map case and a compass that has this thing swinging round
inside it, must find out what it's for.

My friend who claimed extensive map and compass navigation experience
knew what it was for all right, but hoped I could tell her which end
pointed north, since it was a new compass and she had forgotten to
bring the manual along. Standing outside, under a blazing mid-day
sun...

At mid-day it pretty close to due south.
Of course she *knew* it, but at the time of boggling at her new
compass in the sunlight was not *aware* of it. All I had to do to make
her aware of what she knew was to point at the sun.

Couldn't I? I don't know, I've never been there.

or so in midsummer, but many people think of that as being "overhead" at
midday, and thus perhaps don't realise you can get a direction from it.

Trust me - *you* couldn't get lost there. Neither could most people
here. Take a look at the map and you'll see what I mean. Or do indeed
