Funny that 54 people viewed this thread and no one had a reply...
I have the same pedals and if the cleats are already in your shoes and you've used them, say on a mountain bike, then everything will work fine. I'm not sure the compatible cleat codes with the 520, but if it doesn't fit, you only need to buy new cleats (shoes are fine).
And yes, these pedals are fine with a road bike.

Caution: SH55 cleats are multi-release, meant for earlier Shimano pedals.
M520, M540 and M959 are newer, better designs, and use SH51 single release cleats only. Using SH55 on M520 will be scary as the cleats disengage very unpredictably, easily and fast.
Thanks alot!

Caution: M520 pedals are not compatible with SH55 cleats. The cleats release very, very easily every which way. Use SH51 single release cleats.

That's not a compatabillity issue. The SH55 cleats are meant to release easily, hence the name Multi-Release. They're good cleats if you're new to clipless pedals as they're almost impossible to get stuck in at a stop. The only risk they carry is accidental release on hard climbs if the pedal spring tension is set too low.
I forgot...do the cleats come with the pedals or shoes? Either way, I have the same pedals and Shimano 'off-road' shoes and the cleats are easy to get out of, but have never came out while on technical trail. That being said, for road you don't need them as easy as for trail.
Anyway...good luck.
I may start a new topic on this one, but for a quick answer, here goes:
Anyone tried the new PD-A520 SPD Road Pedal??
This has a similar platform to the SPD-SL.
