  1. Hi There fello Atkins'ers

I am meeting with Atkins Nutritionals tomorrow for a TV show. I was
wondering if anyone can help me out with some good questions to ask
    them?

I have been on the Diet for 6 weeks and I have lost 31 pounds....

Very excited about Atkins... really works well for me.

Ask them if it is true, that after the initial water coupled to glycogen
loss at the begining of the diet, that the reason that it works is the
limited food choices cause people to naturally go hypocaloric due to
exhaustion of desired foods, not because of ketosis.

Not that I believe this to be or not be the case, but I do think it
makes for interesting discussions between hard core lcer's and just
    plain dieters.

Congratulations -- that's a LOT of weight to lose in such a short time! Ask them
why they added their own carby stuff into Induction right after Dr. Atkins died.
(Okay, they'll probably cut you out if you ask that, so your on your own :-)

You obviously don't kow a thing about Atkins if you believe the desired
food choices are limited. Once you get over the sgar and starch addiction,
these foods are not craved and without this [censored] the choices are still
    limitless for the healthy foods.

Ask them why Robert Atkins did not have a will ordered, estate mandated
autopsy to be eternal proof his diet, which he claimed "saved his life",
was everything he claimed it to be.

Ask them why it is that NIH studies show that Atkins dieters have a failure
rate of 95% within two years. And how can they justify promoting such a
catastrophic failure of a diet when the large majority of those failures
regain MORE weight than when they began Atkins. Contributing heavily to a
human health merry-go-round of endemic proportions.

Then ask them why their food sucks. With all that money Atkins Inc has
drained from the foolish, they could have at least made a few things
    edible.

How do you mean, "their food"? My sister and her husband are on the
Atkins diet and, as far as I know, they are eating normally, but cutting
out certain food like bread and potatoes. They are not having to buy in

Perhaps, like me Lurker witnessed the Atkins dieters in their first
couple years on the plan. They seem confused and very limited to what
they can eat when in the presence of others people’s food choices. I’m
speaking of breakfast meetings, luncheons, restaurants, cookouts,
parties, ice cream socials, etc. The 5 people I know on Atkins, even to
this day (2 years later) still seem to struggle to find their acceptable
foods at publicly served meals. Even when they do find something to
eat, I doubt it’s what Atkins would consider a “nutritionally balanced
meal.” More likely it’s a double helping of meat. I’m not arguing that
the people in this newsgroup haven’t created a large menu with plenty of
variety for themselves, just stating that I have witnessed some
confusion, especially with new Atkins followers, which I would label
    “limited food choices” as well.

  11. From Science Daily

Atkins Diet Shows Surprising Results, Researcher Says; One-year Study
Shows Diet May Be As Effective And Safe As Conventional Diets

Philadelphia., PA -- A 3-center study led by researchers at the Weight
and Eating Disorders Program of the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine reports the results of the first controlled trial of the Atkins
Diet. The Atkins Diet limits carbohydrates but permits unrestricted
amounts of protein and fat. Compared to a conventional, high-
carbohydrate, low-calorie approach, Atkins dieters lost twice as much
weight at 3 and 6 months but there was no difference between the groups
at 1 year. Despite the lack of differences in weight loss at 1 year, the
Atkins dieters had significantly greater increases in good cholesterol
(HDL) and greater decreases in triglycerides.

This study was funded through grants from the National Institutes of
    Health (NIH)

Of course this was only a 1 year study, but where's your source?

95% and more weight regained is the failure rate for all diets--only 5%
of people sustain medically significant weight loss for 5 years.

My opinion is that the key is both motivation and finding the right way
of eating for each individual's preferences and metabolism. Fairly low
carb is the one that works for me.

Same with my sister. How is the diet working for your sister and her
    husband?

I've not seen her for ages, as she lives quite a long way away and is
busy running a bed-and-breakfast (anybody want a b&b in Norfolk,
Atkins-friendly?), but my mother tells me she's lost a stone or more, &
so has he. Which makes me the "baddie" again, as I'm now fatter than
her (it was such bliss when she was fatter than me!). Mothers!

It seems to be working for them. I gather she cooks potatoes & carrots,
etc, for her children, but otherwise they all eat the same food.
Another friend (and contemporary, in age) of my mother went on the
Atkins diet and discovered a previously-unsuspected gluten intolerance,
so not only has she lost weight, she also feels infinitely better!

Oh, and thank you so much for providing the original poster with so much

I saw this programme when it was first shown, and it was fascinating.
They reckoned it was the high protein content of the diet that made you
eat less, so you lost weight. But they do conclude with a caveat that
not enough long-term studies have been done.

Ask them why they are spreading around a diet that is known to destroy
a persons health........ Errrrrr, actually we already know it's the
money, so ask them how much money they scammed from people last year,
and what it was used for.

The Atkins diet has never been shown to destroy people's health, in fact a
number of recent studies have shown it tends to improve overall health more
    than the traditional low-fat diet.
