Q1 : "Mashing" as in "mashing up hill" what does this mean?

Using too high a gear, and so having to put a lot of effort in to move
the pedals slowly. Usually a result of hitting a hill and not changing
down through the gears quick enough, meaning that you lose momentum
and then struggle up the hill - which will be a lot slower, and is bad
for your knees, legs and bike.

  2. Q1 : "Mashing" as in "mashing up hill" what does this mean?

Q2 : I've just brought a pair or ordinary M+S gloves for the colder
season that's just upon us. After 10 minutes the fleshy bit where palm
meets thumb starts to ache. Remove gloves and ache goes in a minute or
    two. Any ideas why?

Q3 : Just noticed this morning (gorgeous autumnal with remains of summer
warmth) that there are loads of mushrooms in the relatively recently
cultivated fields. I've not noticed this before. Is it just me or is
it a plague year [EVERYBODY PANIC!]

Pushing the pedals hard at a low rate of rotation as opposed to
putting less force in but your feet going like the clappers
    i.e. spinning.

Most cycling gloves have padding to avoid that. Buy some.

I noticed quite a few when I was outside the office the other day but
I've not seen a general mushroom invasion.

Cycling with low cadence and high torque, in a gear that would be considered
too high by a spinner. I wouldn't know if you are more or less likely to do
    this after eating wild mushrooms.

High torque/low rev pedalling - can cause knee problems and accumulation
of lactic acid in the muscles.

Seam in the wrong place? Forefinger/thumb of gloves too short?

Edible mushrooms? Maybe they've been using spent mushroom compost as a
    soil improver.

Cycling like mashing potatoes - a series of disjointed vigorous
downstrokes; also known as 'pedalling squares'.

I prefer to think about the difference between good and poor cyclists as
the difference between piston engines and a turbine. A piston engine, like
a potato masher, operates by vigorous downstrokes (although in a piston
engine at least they're regular); a turbine, like a good cyclist, powers
    all the way round.

There's an important nerve in that web of skin between the thumb and the
fingers. Too much pressure or vibration on it causes palsy. I suspect
there may be a large seam or something which presses in there?

Probably the farmer has bought some used mushroom compost from a mushroom
    farm?

I've got some sheepskin BHS gloves I've been using for years. They're
brilliant. Although they got sodden the other day and I was thinking about
supplementing them with some sealskinz for rainy days.

It's a great year for mushrooms.

Mashing up a hill involves dragging a sound system to a local
high-point and proceeding to spin dub-plates in a dance hall stylee,
blending the tunes together in a pleasing manner.
So 'mashing' is equivalent to 'spinning'.

And on the way back down you can brake dance ;-)

It's that time of year (end of September to mid October) for mushroom
    picking.

Ideally, you're looking for small (~5-10cm) pale mushrooms with a
pointed black/brown nipple on top and dark underbelly.

It's legal to pick these whilst riding if you can bend over that far
without falling off, but illegal to remove them from the field (as this
    would constitute 'processing'

This leaves the only option of picking and eating immediately.

I'd advise you tie a piece of string to your house when you cycle to the
field, so that your return journey won't be overly complicated by the
    ingestion of said mushrooms.

Recite to oneself "This is a piece of string. It is not a doorway to
another universe". You'll be home by tea.

    ;o)
