  1. Do artificially sweetened things like diet sodas make you crave more
    sweets?
I heard a news blurb this morning saying that diet sodas should be avoided
by teenagers because they contribute to craving more sweets. I don't have
a sweet tooth and the only soda I drink is the occasional club soda, but I
do use AS in my baking. They don't make me crave more sweets but, again, I
don't have a sweet tooth to begin with.
    Just curious.

They make me crave, absolutely. I find that aspertame does it and splenda
does not. I used to drink gallons of Caff Free Diet Pepsi but cut it out for
that reason. I am glad to see it being mentioned in the media, I always tell
    people about it!

It doesn't just make me crave sweets but more food in general or just more
soda and no food! And I find if I have the soda around I will tend to drink
more and more soda, even skipping a meal and fiendishly drinking the soda,
craving that too! My friend told me the same thing about herself and I
recently got her to quit the DIet Pepsi - she was hooked bigtime!!

I will get a bottle occasionally now but if I want soda at home I usually
buy Sugar- Free Jones or Waist Watchers, they have splenda and don't make me
    crave.

  3. I have a long habit of having sweet things. These days I use AS such as Ace
K, aspartame, Splenda, or saccharine. I find these have no effect on fat
loss. There may be some short term fluctuations in water weight, but it is
hard to tell, since weight fluctuates anyway.

Your question seems to be if these artificial sweeteners lead to eating
sugar based foods. I would say no, since one can always use artificial
sweetener. There is no reason to use sugar.

I have often used zero calorie diet soft drinks of all kinds.

    No.
Splenda kool-aid will kill a sweet craving faster than a speeding bullet.

    YMMV.

Hasn't worked that way for me, but I'm sure it's a YMMV kind of thing.

  6. I don't notice AS's making me hungry, but I definately notice hunger if I
happen to exceed my carb limit. Than can happen from consuming too much AS
    or anything too carby

Not directly at least. If I feel like something sweet a diet coke or
similar will usually do the trick just fine, so there's really no
    problem there.

  8. Artificially sweetened marshmallows are made in Europe and sold on ebay. I
bought some many months ago. They were very good. They had a perfect taste
and texture. However, they are also, in effect, laxatives.

I haven't been a teenager for about 30 years 🙂 but artificial sweeteners
actually satisfy whatever cravings I have for sweet so that I don't eat
    sugar.

If only I could find artificially sweetened marshmallows - lol.

Kool-Aid does funky things to my throat. No idea

They trigger physical reactions in some people. They keep
habit-based sweet tooth going in some. They help some.
Which of those classes will you be in? Your own
expectations can't be used to tell.

The conservative approach is to figure that for you they
will trigger physical reactions or keep old habits alive,
and to avoid them at first. Then some amount of time in,
try them and see if they turn on feelings that had been
fading. The reactionairy approach is to read that advice
to avoid them at first, think it's a religious approach,
assume it's to last forever, and shun them forever. The
aggressive approach is to assume they won't be a problem
for you and use them from the gate. Which to try? Your
body, your science experience. I personally prefer what
i called the conservative approach. I had maybe 1-2
diet sodas per week in the first month then tried more.

If you don't have a sweet tooth to begin with, it doesn't
appear you have much risk from them.

  13. I wasn't asking for myself since I don't have a problem with them or
anything sweet for that matter. I was asking for reactions from people who
do have a sweet tooth. :-)

  14. Same for me and it doesn't matter what form the carbs are. Even the
supposedly slower metabolizing complex carbs will make me hungry much
sooner if I get more than I should.

  15. So for you and your friend, it seems to be the type of AS that affects you.
    Interesting.
Tate and Lyle should do a controlled study with different AS's including
their sucralose. It might prove to be a great marketing tool if there's a
trend toward sucralose not inducing cravings like the other AS's.

  17. I define a sweet tooth as cravings for sweet things that often cause you
over-indulge in them. I like sweet things but I don't crave them and have
never felt the urge to over-indulge in them.
Pre-LC, I craved and over-indulged in pasta and pizza so I consider that a
    pasta/pizza tooth. :-)
I haven't had a craving for any food in the past year and a half since I
    started LC.

I think it would be great for marketing if more items said "sugar free"
instead of "Diet" like Jones soda - it says Sugar Free, not too big, over
the name and has splenda in it. But pepsi or whatever - you got this big
    lame can/bottle that says "DIET"
