Today I was idly wondering about my led flashers. Which uses up the battery faster: The flash mode? or the steady state mode?
I am not interested in the answer for any practical reason. It's just that when I ask myself that sort of question and I can't figure out the answer for myself, I can't rest until I know.

No, flashing mode uses much les power, because....the lights are only on for part of the time (it's theoretically possible that they could be brighter for the time that they are on, but I don't believe this is usually the case and even if so it is insufficient to use up as much power overall).
300h vs 50h battery life, IIRC, for a particular red LED light I have.

Depends. Depends on the design of the circuit especially at the IC level. LED's themselves have extremely low power consumption, so relatively the circuit required to make them flash can be just as consumptive.
And I have seen figures quoted from bike light product literature that show this can be true in practice too.

Cateye give the battery run times for their LED jobs that have both flashing and steady modes. Batteries last longer in flashing mode for the EL200 at least.

Depends. The flash circuitry might use more power than teh non-flash circuitry. The LED might be brighter when flashing than when solid. The manufacturer could make it be either way.
