Hi,
The short answer (to my best knowledge) is: it depends on how the antibody
was produced and who produced it.

You usually find the info in the datasheet for your antibody..
amost all companies include information about possible cross reactivity for
other species in their product descriptions.

If you don't have the datasheet try to find out where the antibody was
purchased, then you usually can dig up the most likely TDS and find the info
you need.

If you do not have access to this information (ie. the antibody is a
leftover and noone knows where it was bought) you have to wing it.. you
could compare the sequences of cow a-lactalbumin and human a-lactalbumin and
see how similar they are.

cow a-lactalbumin and human a-lactalbumin aren't enough similar, but
i've found a company which sells a goat anti a-lactalbumin with bovine
reactivity!!
I worked on food dna in the past and I'm a newbe on this field..do you
work on antibodies too?

You're welcome,
at the moment I mostly work with antibodies (western blot, immune
fluorescence microscopy, elisa,..) and a few non AB-methods as well (gc/ms,
hplc/ecd, wpi-electrode, ..).
A good source for such practical biochemistry oriented questions (or the
answers thereof I should say) is the bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts newsgroup
by the way- might come in handy when something goes wrong.
