It's pretty much a given that during induction you should eat only whole,
non-processed and healthy foods. This isn't just about low-carbing, it's
about breaking your addiction to junk. Low-carb bars are just replacements
for high-carb junk. Most folks subscribe to the idea that frankenfood like
the 'low-carb' bars are best left for pre-maintenance or maintenance as they
are just too 'iffy' for induction or weight loss...the whole 'sugar alcohols
don't count' thing is pretty much untrue for the majority of the population;
it's just how MUCH they count that differs. Best to avoid them IMHO.

[censored]....I just looked up Sugar Alcohols in yahoo and got a page telling me
there the same thing as Polyols....which seem to be 86g in every 100g of
these suar-free mints I've been eating. They were recomended on an atkins
info page I read which is why I bought them....
anything ending in 'ol' in the ingredients list = sugar alcohol.
sugar-free does not mean carb free. you really need to get away from the
idea that it's ok to eat candy/bars/etc.
you want to eat whole, non-processed foods during induction. things that
grown in the ground or walk on legs or swim with fins. nothing else. no
exceptions. oh, and water.
buy the atkins book if you haven't and follow it to a T.

No. Think about it for a bit. They are candy bars. Are candy
bars allowed in the first two weeks of *any* weight loss plan?
Just because they have a cool sounding label does not stop them
from being a candy bar.

They make a lot of money lying on the label. The idea of
"effective" carbs does work for some people, does not work at
all for some people, and only works partially for most. Yet
they blithely assume it works for everyone.
How can you tell which group you're in? At first, you can't.
Te sensible approach is to figure the worst case until you
*can* tell which group you're in. Count all of the sugar
alcohol as carb grams until you've spent a week out of ketosis
to find your CCLL.
Now let's step back again and think some more. In the last
several days you have posted an assortment of issues trying to
get around limits of the plan. You want to drink sodas to the
exclusion of water and you grudgingly start to have water. You
want to have candy bars. Likely you've posted about some other
limit that I didn't notice.
Which is more important to you? Trying to get around the limits
so the plan doesn't work as well and so that you're more likely
to fall off soon, or knuckling down and accepting that you will
have to change a bunch of bad habits? Phrased that way I bet
you'll find the answer a lot easier than the one-by-one answers
to your posts.

They can certainly help prevent any problems you might have with
constipation ;-)
Seriously, until you've been doing LC for a while and know how you react
to dietary diversions, best to stay away from foods that are made up to be
like foods that aren't on your diet.

Whats most important to me is being happy in life. I need to loose some
weight in order to fullfil this and I really really want to get down to a
sensible weight. When I originally lost about 60lbs in 5 months on atkins
last year I followed it fairly strickly for looking at carbs on packets and
things. I didn't know anything about different sweeteners and I really
enjoy my coffee in the morning.
When starting this again I looked further into it, saw things I knew nothing
about before like low-carb chocolate and ice cream and things. Browsing
this news group told me I should be drinking diet soft drinks and that even
things with few carbs listen on them may have things hidden....but when i
did this before I drank coffee and diet soft drinks all the time...i rarely
drink water because I dont like the taste. It's important to me that I
stick to this but when I'm on a break from work at 10pm at night and all
they serve in the kitchen are fries and coated chicken or breaded scampi and
the fact the only shop close to us gives me the option of sandwiches or
candy bars then it's useful if I can bring like a low-carb chocolate bar
with me or something like that...it would HELP me keep to the plan rather
than make me more likely "to fall off"
It would be much easier to do this diet if I could find diet soda's which
are truly helpful on atkins or chocolate or something for when I can't get
other low-carb food (and it really would be impossible, I'm not just making
excuses. If I brought salad or meats or cheese and things from home theres
no where I'd be allowed to store it and theres nothing open near me at night
I can go to in my break)
I know someone else commented a couple of days ago about me making excuses
and not committing but I assure you my questions are the complete
opposite....I am fully committed to this and just trying to find ways to
help me stick to it rather than find excuses not to do it. I've ordered
some beef jerkey online (hard to find in stores here) which are ok right and
I guess I'll just have to smoke more to curb that pesky appetite! Although
I've ordered some of the multi-vitamins and suger-craving suppliments which
I think should help me a lot with the appetite thing.
I really do think I am one of the lucky ones who can get around the
aspartame problem as I switched to a lot of sweetened products when I did
the diet originally and it worked better than I could imagine.....I just
thought I could come off for a couple of weeks and come back on....and never
ever did...Seems to be working though, this morning I was down 8lbs from
Monday (and in simmilar clothes - tshirt and boxers)
Seriously, without saying I'm making excuses (coz I'm really not trying to)
I do appreciate any advice you or anyone, who's got much more experiance at
this than me, can give.

No. If you're already thinking of ways to "get around the
system", then you will likely fail, IMO.

I wasn't trying to get around the system I was trying to find food I can
bring to work so I have something to eat while working 5pm till 3:30am on
friday and saturday night seeing as how theres nothing anywhere near me
where I can by salad or fresh meats at that hour and no where in my work to
store such an item if I brought it from home...the web page said they were
carb free...I got them....I realised the sugar alcohol thing and thought I'd
check before eating them.
I'm not trying to fail...I'm trying to find things I can eat when I work and
live a lifestyle that doesn't allow me to pop in somewhere for salads and
things. If I could eat a bar of low-carb chocolate on a break or a packet
of low-carb cookies or something I'd be FAR more likely to stick to the
diet - not fail as you suggest.

Hard boiled eggs will keep for a good while. You can bring those from home.
So will beef jerky or a good hard salami.
Macadamia nuts.
If you bring a small insulated lunchbox, you could bring tons of things.
They even have insulated bags.
A carbolite candy bar, or any candy bar, isn't a good meal substitute.

I've got beef jerky ordered online and am waiting for it to arrive....but
I'm not sure if I like it or not....only had it the once when I was in the
states and I can remember thinking it wasn't that great....
We have things here in the UK called Peperami which is like a Slim Jim but
not as plastic and more meaty....far far nicer than slim jims but similar
taste....I bought a couple of those today as a snack for when I was doing a
play today and had some tandori chicken and lamb with no sauce and a little
mayo when I got home. That along with a couple of slices of bacon, some
chedder cheese and a couple of bits of pre-cooked spiced chicken is all I
had and a couple of cans of diet coke and about 1.5 liters of water.

Or bring a cooler. There are these cold pack things, not sure the brand
name. You put them in your freezer, and once they're frozen they're
supposed to stay cold longer than regular ice. That way you can pack deli
meat and cheese too, for quick roll-ups. When I work late at the movie
theater, there's nowhere for me to buy food either, and no refrigerator,
but I do have a cooler. Bringing my own food has saved me from the
temptation of free popcorn many nights.

I think the OP is just looking for ways to make the plan adaptable to his or
her life. It's hard to make huge changes, I've lost 30 lbs in the past 6
months, and Yes, I've eaten LC bars and other "illegal" stuff. Maybe my weight
loss was slower than normal, but I don't care, keeping if off is more important
to me (plus my doc is very pleased with my blood sugar levels which is why I
started in the first place), and if I can't eat "candy" etc., it will only make
me crave and possibly binge.
I agree that the first few weeks you need to be strict, if only to get the
"hang" of the diet. Use your body as a guide, if you add "frankenfoods" and you
start gaining or stalling, cut them out. Only the OP knows what's good for them
- preaching "frankenfoods are evil" isn't helpful (IMO).
